News 7 HOMES - AND HELPING US WORK WITH PARTNERS TO REGENERATE COMMUNITIES
Tenants shaping Gallowgate plans
TENANTS are helping shape exciting plans for the next phase of regeneration in the Gallowgate. New proposals - which are at a very early stage - involve looking at the future of some tenement flats in the area as well as building more homes. The plans would also involve tackling the long-standing issue of the derelict Whitevale baths buildings and the surrounding environment. A series of open events and face-
to-face meetings have been held to explain the plans and to get tenants’ views.
GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said: “No decision on the regeneration of the Gallowgate will be taken until the community has had a chance to tell us what they think.”

HAT a difference a few years make! From high-rise to low-rise,
our pictures show the changing face of Sighthill - and how GHA and its partners are helping transform the city as a whole. Tenants recently got together to celebrate the opening of 141 new GHA homes in the area. These homes are the first stage in the
regeneration of Sighthill. Tenant Nan McQueen, 84, who has lived in the area for almost 50 years, moved into her Huntingdon Road home in September. Nan, pictured below, a retired bookbinder, said: “I moved to Sighthill in 1967 and lived in the high rise blocks in Pinkston Drive for 40 years. I loved it there. “Now I live in a nice wee house with
a walk-in shower and a handrail, which are a big help. The house is much warmer too. “There have been a lot
changes in Sighthill. It’s an exciting time.” GHA Chair Gordon Sloan added: “Our
tenants are already enjoying living in these homes. I’m looking forward to seeing the regeneration progress.” Sighthill has been earmarked as a priority for regeneration by GHA, the city council and Scottish Government. Over the next few years the area will see hundreds of more new homes, a new school campus, student accommodation, new shops, as well as a road bridge and land bridge across the M8. Residents and community
representatives on the Sighthill Local Delivery Group helped shape the plans. Work has started on preparing the last two blocks at 31/35 and 32/34 Pinkston Drive for demolition by ultra high-reach machine. The demolition should be complete towards the end of the year.
Barmulloch brings people together
NEW GHA homes in Barmulloch are bringing people together and helping create a sense of community. The 157 new homes include an amenity block for tenants who need an extra bit of support. Tenants there are organising social
events and get-togethers in the common room. Tenant Margaret Anderson, 80, pictured
above, said: “The common room is really good for bringing people together. “We held a Christmas dinner and Hogmanay party and Burns Supper there and we have regular events, including soup and a sandwich get-togethers on a Tuesday. “People love it here. Neighbours really look out for each other. It’s a great community and makes us proud to live here.”
