Help for disabled at town cemetery

MOBILITY scooters and a wheelchair are now available to give disabled people access to the whole of Snodland Cemetery. The town council closed the gates to restrict vehicular access to the cemetery after damage was caused to graves and kerbstones. There were also occasions when visitors were intruding on a funeral service when driving beside mourners at a graveside. A car park was developed

next to the cemetery for visitors. Disabled parking was made available using a RADAR key, but was restricted to an area at the back of the chapel. Linda Hammond, of Cox's

Close, Snodland, goes to the cemetery regularly with her partner, Malcolm Taylor, to tend the grave of her parents, Jack and Joan Hammond. She suffers from adhesions of

the abdomen, which severely restrict her walking ability. It is 270 yards from the chapel to the grave and it was hard work for Malcolm to push her in a wheelchair. She was full of praise for Julie

and Eamonn Streatfield, the council's employees on the site. "I have found them so helpful and they always go the extra mile to

help," said Linda. "I strongly recommend the service that has been put in place. No problem is too big to solve, enabling the public to visit their loved ones."

"Local officers can apply for funds on behalf of the organisa- tions. I applied on behalf of the football club and they were fortunate to receive the maximum amount of £500."
