the United States numerous times. As a favor to friends, plus for his own use, he com- piled a list of favorite places to dine in 30 states, back in 1936. Duncan pronounced that “plain American cooking is the best in the world”, adding, “and it can be the worst”. His high standards were, for decades, the criterion for eating out in America. Hines greatest con- tribution was showing Ameri-
cans were to fi nd that “decent meal”, at the end of the road. T ree years before his death he sold exclusive rights for his name and guides to Procter & Gamble. Back in California, we have tried many of the es- tablishment’s recipes from the “MEO” book including the one from the Sky Room. All were delicious. A favorite is my adaptation of the Kin Chu Café’s recipe back on page 4!
most end of Fiordland Na- tional Park on the South Island of New Zealand, is a national icon. In places it is as much as 400 meters deep, celebrated for its pristine landscapes, and re- mote and rugged beauty, it is actually a fi ord, rather than a sound. A river- formed valley subsequently
fl ooded by the sea is called a sound, how- ever,

ford Sound is known as the wettest inhab- ited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest places in the world. Rainfall can reach 10 inches during a span of 24 hours!
Seals, penguins, and south- ernmost population of bottle- nose
dolphins frequent the
waters, and whales, especially humpback whales and southern
right whales are increasingly observed due to recoveries of each species. The Sound has been identifi ed as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife Interna- tional because it is a breeding site for Fiordland penguins.

There were two elderly people living in Trailer Estates, a Florida mobile home park. He was a widower and she a widow. They had known one another for a number of years. One evening there was a commu- nity supper in the big activity center. The two were at the same table, across from one another. As the meal went on, he made a few admiring glances at her and fi nally gathered his courage to ask her, “Will you marry me?”
After about six seconds of ‘careful consideration,’ she answered. “Yes. Yes, I will.” The meal ended and, with a few more pleasant exchang- es, they went to their respective places.
Next morning, he was troubled. “Did she say ‘yes’ or did she say ‘no’?” He couldn’t remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. Not even a faint memory. With trepidation, he went to the telephone and called her. First, he explained that he didn’t remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he gained a little more courage, he inquired, “When I asked if you would marry me, did you say ‘Yes’ or did you say ‘No’?”
He was delighted to hear her say, “Why, I said, ‘Yes, yes I will’ and I meant it with all my heart.” Then she continued, “I am so glad that you called, because I couldn’t remember who had asked me.”
