COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICE INITIATIVE ANDERSONS PHARMACY PoRtADoWn

With the emphasis on pharmacy as the ‘first port of call for healthcare’, it’s clear that the role of the pharmacist has greatly changed; moving increasingly from compounding medicines in the dispensary to being able to help patients manage their medication.

Judith Dowey’s innovative hypertension clinic – carried out in conjunction with the local gP practice

– is a supreme example of the proactive work that pharmacists can do to improve patient outcomes.

In their ruling, the judges said that the winning pharmacy ‘clearly identified the need to address the rise in a specific condition, which was becoming commonplace within the pharmacy.

‘A member of staff went that extra mile by undertaking a new

qualification to help address and alleviate what they had identified.’

needless to say, Judith was absolutely delighted with the award!

‘I did my independent prescribing with a view to strengthening links with the gP practice,’ she told Pif. ‘I chose this area because it was obvious that it was an issue that needed tackled, so it’s a real ‘win- win’ for everyone!’

‘Pharmacy today is becoming more and more difficult,’ said Rebecca Cabrejas from award sponsor, Actavis UK, ‘so having awards events like the Pharmacy in focus Awards provides a great opportunity to recognise the work that pharmacists do.’
