BUILDING FOR EDUCATION PROJECT REPORT  University extension project

A £4.4 million extension at the University of Newcastle’s medical school features a ceiling created and manufactured by Hunter Douglas. The team used its expert knowledge to advise on the 200m2 open linear wood ceiling in Western Red Cedar for the first floor staircase, the boardroom, and at the top of atrium of the Ridley Building. Hunter

Douglas supplied 111mm module, with each plank measuring 92mm x 15mm. The planks were supplied in different lengths and featured tongue and groove joints. The gap between each plank was infilled with black non-woven felt to provide some acoustic absorption.

The Robert Owen Academy in Hereford, was one of the first recipients to receive re-deployed buildings from the London Olympics in 2012. Fairoak Construction needed some support and ARP were on hand to help. The brief was to provide the decoration in the form of light ivory

powder coated bands which would fit to the building to bring it in line with its new environment. ARP’s Trueline bespoke fabrications were ideal for this solution, being made to the exact dimensions of the building. In total ARP specified, manufactured, painted and delivered 330 individual pieces.

The University of Birmingham’s new Chamberlain Hall Student Accommodation is an impressive example of regeneration which is in keeping with the landscape as well as providing all essential capacity growth for the future. Consisting of two linked tall towers at 17 at & 21 stories and five ‘finger’ blocks. The facade had to provide function as well as form.

Making the facade work and integrate with all the cladding elements involved Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems designing new methods of fixing. The flush facade was a must and all the elements: Comar Glazing, Mesh and Copper panels needed to integrate.
