OLDHAM & DISTRICT RIDING CLUB Spring News Update By Heather Howe

Oldham &District Riding Club stepped out of 2016 in style. At our annual awards evening there were many rosettes and beautiful trophies handed out to more members than ever before, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses that have supported us throughout the 2016 season with sponsorship, trophy donations and prizes.

Here is a selection of champions from 2016: Show jumping champion was Claire Bradbury-Gardner with Firefly, Dressage champion was Janet Shaw with Painted Dreamer, In hand showing champion was Julie Ellis with Llandian Waldo. Our overall champion was Emma Stewart with Tia Rose and our overall reserve champion was Emma Doughty with Guinness. Other special mentions to include are Progression In Dressage for Mark Prior, Progress In Show Jumping for Wendy Williams, our Memorial One Day Event champion was Helen North, the Most Progress At Camp was awarded to

Sandra Thomas Coles and our Most Loyal Member award was won by Becky Harrison.

The Friezland User Group and its affiliates have been working very hard behind the scenes to update and maintain our beautiful venue, January saw the top up of the arena surface which has made a huge difference to all of our members and the community which use the facility. The Friezland User Group coordinate the calendar of events detailing all the booked activities at the site so please see their Facebook page for further details. 1st Team Event of 2017 - On 8th January, we took a team of showjumpers to Woodnook. The team did brilliantly, all going double clear but unfortunately they got pipped at the post in the jump off to come second over all. The Pink Ladies consisted of, left to right: Janet Shaw, Helen North, Elizabeth Kershaw and Wendy Williams.

We are delighted to announce that we are taking 6 teams to compete against other riding clubs in the North West at Penistone Riding Club on March 26th. The only requirement we have for anybody to join our teams is that they must be a member and our membership can be located on our website which is We are looking forward to the next competition, you should get a team together and come and join us. We are always seeking new members to come along and have some fun with us!

Stepping into the 2017 season we are excited to announce a new range of merchandise, which includes blouson jackets, hoodies and saddlecloths all printed with the ODRC logo. This merchandise is being warmly welcomed by our members and will hopefully be making a lot of appearances across the North West with our team outings.

The winter dressage league has been very well supported by members and non-members alike. Wonderful feedback has been given by the competitors who have been looking to compete over the quieter winter months, with some seeking out the qualifiers for the Championships of Great Britain! The final prize giving will be held at the last of the league competitions on 16th April, perhaps you could come along to watch? Entry to spectate at our shows is free and we welcome spectators from all walks of life.

Looking ahead the site at Freizland will be having some maintenance work to improve the ground conditions in preparation for our biggest show season yet!
