The year the big freeze took hold


The harsh winter of 1947 brought misery to many in South East Cornwall.


The Cornish Times of Friday, February 7, said: ‘The intense cold of last week, followed by the very heavy snowfall with almost Arctic conditions, made people realise that snow looks very nice on Christmas cards and is a paradise for juveniles, but is very uncomfortable for adults.


‘The more juvenile members of the populace went snowballing and tobogganing whilst the older folk made the best of an unpleasant experience.’


When the water main froze at Plaidy, Looe, water had to be fetched by residents from a


spring on the beach. Looe was reported as suffering ‘extreme misery’ after its water supply failed.


A shute on West Looe Hill and an old conduit by Barclays Bank in East Looe became the main sources of water.


In some country areas, roads were blocked with drifts as high as the hedges. Villages near Torpoint were cut off while those near Callington were described as ‘breadless, busless and beerless’.
