14 News MP discusses online safety

experience online. Mr Hart, who is involved in trying

to establish new anti-online bullying legislation, talked to representatives of Facebook about the Facebook Parents Portal.

The Portal is a major new resource SIMON HART MP attended

a meeting in Parliament with Facebook and online safety campaigners Internet Matters. The event marked a new partnership between Facebook and Internet Matters, who have joined forces to ensure that children have a positive

that gives parents, teachers and guardians the tools they need to ensure the children in their care are safe on Facebook. He also met with Internet Matters General Manager Carolyn Bunting to discuss their work to keep children safe. Also attending the event was anti-

bullying charity the Diana Awards. Mr Hart met three Diana Awards anti-bullying ambassadors, who told him about their efforts to eliminate bullying and engage students in social action online.

Mr Hart said: “Online safety is

an issue which affects all families. It is vital that parents and children use the resources available to them to deal with issues like sexting, online pornography and cyberbullying. It is great news that Facebook and Internet Matters are working together to make sure that this happens. I would encourage everyone concerned about the online environment to go to the Facebook Safety Centre and the new Parents Portal.” Internet Matters General Manager

Carolyn Bunting said: “The internet offers children an astonishing number of way to connect, create, learn and have fun, and it is vital that we support families on how best to help their children have a safe and age- appropriate experience.”

Milford man has colonoscopy on live TV PHILIP MCSPARRON, a

welding inspector, formerly of Milford Haven, appeared in the first ever televised advert shown live from inside the human body. The 90-second advert aired on

Wednesday (Jan 18) on Channel 4. Now living in Barry, Philip

appeared on television receiving a colonoscopy live at approximately 3.25pm. Philip was inspired to take part in

the live colonoscopy by his brother, John McSparron, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2010. Mr McSparron had to have the

colonoscopy due to his routine bowel cancer screening picking up hidden traces of blood in his stool. The procedure showed Philip

having two polyps, which are mostly harmless but can progress into bowel cancer, removed. The advert, part of Cancer

Research UK’s Right Now campaign, aims to show the different realities of those affected by cancer. After receiving a screening kit on

his 60th birthday this year, Philip said if it had not been for his brother John’s experience seven years ago, he is sure he would not have taken the test. John, like his brother, had been fit

and healthy but was diagnosed with bowel cancer after completing the test.

He is now thankfully all clear of

the disease but if it had not been for John’s experience, Philip would not have been aware of his own condition. Following this truly eye-opening

experience, Philip and John want to raise awareness of the importance of screening and early diagnosis.

(L-R): Janice Cole-Williams (Lead Nurse, Withybush General Hospital), Bethan Andrews (Senior Sister), Mr and Mrs Norton (Interviewees) and Tina Coleman (Recruitment Campaign Specialist)

A HEALTHCARE support

worker has secured a job at Withybush Hospital after randomly posting on a Pembrokeshire Facebook page about relocating here.

When Kirsti Norton posted on a

local Facebook page saying how she and her student nurse husband, Adam, were thinking about relocating to Pembrokeshire, little did she realise that within a few months they would both be sat in front of Withybush General Hospital Lead Nurse Jane Cole-Williams being interviewed for permanent jobs. Thanks to the beady eye of Director

of Workforce and OD Lisa Gostling, Kirsti and Adam were signposted to Hywel Dda University Health Board’s Recruitment Campaign Specialist Tina Coleman, who supported them through their recruitment process. Kirsti and Adam have now been

offered permanent posts and will begin a process of on-boarding with

continued support from Tina and the wider recruitment team. Kirsti said: “Tina has been really

supportive with setting up these interviews as well as information regarding relocation. “We have brought our children

to the area on holiday previously and have fallen in love with the place. The opportunity to move here with jobs already in place is a dream come true, and I can’t thank everyone enough for their support.” Sally Owen, Strategic Resourcing

Manager for the University Health Board, said: “This really does demonstrate the power of social media and the importance it plays in recruiting high quality staff, not only locally but nationally and internationally. “We are working hard to increase

our presence on all social media platforms and encourage the public to follow/like us to keep abreast of our current vacancies”.

Town Council agrees 3% precept rise NEYLAND TOWN COUNCIL

Vue.

has recently agreed to set a precept of £60 per household for the residents of the town, which represents an increase of £2 per household or a little over 3%. The increase is to accommodate

some of the additional responsibilities to be taken on by the Town Council, including the maintenance of newly- acquired public land, and will take account of prices and inflation. The council acknowledges the

need for repair and refurbishment of the existing play equipment at the Victoria Court play park. A new budget will be created for

the maintenance of green spaces as the council will be taking over the ownership and responsibility for the play park and the green field at Belle

The town development budget

will provide for the provision of WiFi for the town centre and the refurbishment of the information boards at Brunel Quay. The total Town Council budget

will be £89,140.40 and by increasing the precept to £60, this will bring in a sum of £80,424, plus other income to a total of £83,924. The shortfall of £5,210.40 will be met from reserves. The Mayor of Neyland, Dr

Simon Hancock, said the council would be allocating sums for twinning and Christmas festivities and the council was determined that taxpayers would get good value for money. He said: “We want to do the very best for residents in spending the precept.”
