BOURNEC MMUNITYCHAMPIONS in association with
Lincolnshire Co-op and Bourne Leisure create a ‘coast’ area for care home
A
gents from Lincolnshire Co-operative teamed up with staff from Bourne Leisure’s head office and Travel Weekly to transform a garden
at a care home for elderly people with dementia. The fantastic transformation came after Lincolnshire Co-op put forward the project for Bourne’s annual Community Champions competition, run in partnership with Travel Weekly. Residents at Hartsholme House care home in Lincolnshire can now enjoy a ‘coastal’ area of the garden, complete with sand, pebbles, decorative beach huts and a plant-filled boat. Travel Weekly managing editor Robin Searle took part in
the project, and said he was blown away by the commitment and enthusiasm of the Co-op and Bourne Leisure teams. “To see the transformation take place in the space of a day
was really special,” he said. “As a previous Community Champions winner, Lincolnshire Co-op has once again shown the importance it places on caring for those in the communities it serves, and it has formed a great partnership with Bourne Leisure which has lent its financial, logistical and personal support to a truly worthwhile project.” Bourne Community Champions was launched in 2014 as
an extension of Bourne Leisure’s charity and community work, with agencies invited to put forward good causes to be supported in person and with a £500 cash contribution. Louise Tansey, national sales manager for Bourne Leisure,
said: “We had some excellent entries yet again this year and, as always, were extremely impressed with the incredible
support agents are providing for their communities. “We were overjoyed to make such a difference to the garden at Hartsholme House. The reaction of the team and the residents at the house was absolutely wonderful, we couldn’t be happier with the results!” She added: “We should also thank Sarah Gibson of Clews
Landscape Architecture, who visited in advance and drew up plans for the project free of charge.” Rachel Ashmore, Lincolnshire Co-op education and
volunteering co-ordinator, said: “The support we’ve received from Bourne Leisure and Travel Weekly has been amazing – thanks to them we have finally been able to complete this fantastic project which we’ve been trying to do since last year. The father of one of our store managers was actually
a resident here and, as the Lincs Co-op is a community retailer supporting local projects close to its stores and head office, it was amazing to be able to complete this project and see the end result of something so close to our hearts.” In addition to the day of community support, Lincolnshire Co-op will also have its efforts honoured at the Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Awards in July. Two runners-up also received £100 from the Bourne Community Team towards their projects. They were: l Co-operative Travel, Walsall To help organise a fundraising day for a local hospice. l Thomas Cook, Oldbury To help train guide dogs to support the Blind Children’s Organisation.
