As the weekly pots got bigger and bigger—they started out at about $2,000 and grew as large as $350,000!) we began to feel uncom- fortable having two volunteers cart two large garbage bags of cash to the bank each Thursday night. For safe- ty and insurance reasons, we hired a Brinks truck to drive the six hours from Halifax to pick up the money af- ter each draw.

event—CBC, Rogers and all the local broadcasters—and this helped attract

more and more ticket purchasers each week. It also meant that we had to do little to no promotion our- selves. Business was through the roof for business owners in town all summer and until the ace was finally drawn. Chase the Ace really put our town
on the map by boosting our image and increasing tourism. Lots of secondary businesses and organizations benefit- ed as well: hockey teams sold hot dogs on Thursday nights, one ten-year-old boy sold parking spots for $10 and lo- cal restaurants, gas stations and stores all got a boost in business. There was a two-hour traffic jam
after every draw as up to 5,000 cars all left town simultaneously. It was a huge time commitment and
stressful at times for all of us who were involved as volunteers, but knowing that all this money would be helping the community and ultimately helping Recreaplex members and Dalhousie citizens was great motivation.
And the winner is… We were fortunate that when the
ace of spades was finally drawn, it was very late in the game—week 47 of a possible 52 weeks. It gave us many weeks of fundraising, and it gave the jackpot time to really grow. We were extremely pleased that
the eventual winner of the big jackpot was a local man in his thirties with a young family who had purchased just two tickets. This was the absolute best case scenario for us, because he is a big
