Rheinland Pfalz-Saar International (RPSI)

By Ann Daum W

herever you live, chances are the Rheinland Pfalz-Saar International (RPSI) offers a full-service inspection site nearby! The RPSI registers Deutsches Sportpferd (DSP) Warmblood horses, German Riding Ponies (GRP) as well as

Knabstrupper and purebred Haflingers. RPSI offers experienced guidance to breeders, the most extensive inspection tour available, a simple and affordable microchipping and Horse Identification Document (HID) program, and innovative programs designed to help breeders market their North American horses. What can the RPSI do for your breeding program? We are experienced, approach- able and we issue World Breeding Federation accepted German passports. In fact, the RPSI registers foals and young horses and accepts mares and stallions from all of the recognized European Warmblood organizations into their books, as well as regis- tered Thoroughbreds, Arabians and Anglo-Arabians. The RPSI also has books for sport ponies, and both American and German ponies are branded with a special oak-leaf pony brand. The RPSI is one of the few registries operating in North America as a direct exten- sion of its German counterpart—the PRPS (Pferdezuchtverband Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar). This means the RPSI follows German rules, and foals born here are issued German pass- ports, just like foals born in Germany. So North American horses registered with the RPSI are eligible to compete and breed in Germany, under the same rules as horses born in Germany. Whether you have a promising foal, an upcoming young stallion to be inspected, or

a performance horse who needs a microchip and Permanent ID for USEF breed/age/ experience classes, the RPSI can help. The RPSI offers support for breeders and owners through pedigree verification and research, feedback and guidance from experienced staff, superb awards programs, annual stallion service auction and futurity, select online foal auctions, annual breeder’s tour to the South German stallion approvals and much more.

USEF rule changes will ask sport horse owners to provide proof of their horse’s iden-

tity for certain breed, age and experience related classes. Are you ready? The RPSI has been advocating for permanent horse ID in North America from their

first inspections in 1995. Every horse inspected and registered with the RPSI is given a Unique Equine Life Number (UELN), as well as a microchip and optional brand for permanent identification. Even sport horses and ponies with unknown or ineligible pedigrees are given an HID passport and microchip, simply for identification purposes. One of the most important reasons to register and microchip your horse is to ensure

he doesn’t get ‘lost in the crowd’ after changing hands. A microchip or other perma- nent ID is the best chance your horse has to keep his value, history and show record, or for mares, to have a second chance as a broodmare after her show career. For breeders, permanent HID means they can track their horses’ show careers and

earn points for horses they’ve bred. For buyers, proof of age and identity rules out identity fraud—sadly just as common in the horse show world as it is for credit card holders. In the past, the RPSI has uncovered many horses’ lost identities using the two numbers under their brand (the final two digits of their registration number). Now, with all RPSI horses receiving microchips, the process will become even easier. The RPSI uses a universal, 15-digit microchip. Universal scanners are easy to find and can be purchased inexpensively—there is no longer any reason for the U.S. to lag behind other sport horse producing nations in establishing horse identities.
