Making history - the day a Brummie beat Pele
By John Griffin
Few players ever got the better of Pele on the football field – but veteran Birmingham factory worker John Taylor belongs firmly in that rarefied league. John, now 67 and still working
three days a week at BSA Technologies in Kitts Green, came face-to-face with the Brazilian star in 1975 when he was playing in goal for Los Angeles Aztecs in the North American Soccer League.
‘I had been quite nervous facing a player of his ability’
And, more than 40 years later, the
affable Brummie can still recall thwarting the world’s greatest-ever player in the Aztecs’ clash with New York Cosmos, and ending up on the
winning side by a 5-1 margin. John, a former Aston Villa
reserve goalkeeper, says the LA Aztecs-New York Cosmos match remains the high spot of his career. “I remember saving several
attempts from Pele during the course of that match. “He always seemed to be able to
find that extra space,” he said. “At the end of the game Pele
was near me, so I shook his hand and hugged him. I had been quite nervous facing a player of his ability.” Sadly, the game proved one of
John’s final appearances in the American league. John still has a scrapbook with American newspaper cuttings and photographs of the game in which he emerged triumphant against Pele. “That game was undoubtedly the highlight of my career.”
