Name: Judith Armstrong Company: Millennium Point Job Title: CEO
What does your company do? Millennium Point is a 500,000 square feet building located in Eastside. We are a charity and landlord to major institutions and a home for diverse events that nurture innovation, discovery and learning.
How did it all start? The Millennium Point project was spearheaded by our founding members Birmingham City Council, Birmingham City University, and Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. Conceived in 1995, Millennium Point was built at a cost of £114m, and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth in July 2002.
What’s your greatest achievement so far? There are lots of things that I am proud of such as becoming a financial director of a large corporate division at the age of 29. At Millennium Point, this year
has been our best so far. As a team, we have developed a focused strategy. This has produced our best ever set of financial results, a strong platform for growth.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? I think that all of my career opportunities have been risks as I’ve taken on some big projects and jobs which have been completely out of my comfort zone. Part of the journey is learning along the way and challenging yourself professionally.
What keeps you awake at night? Ideas keep me awake at night! If I’ve had an exciting meeting or thought of something interesting for the business, I find myself lying awake thinking them through.
If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Not that much because I think that challenges are to be overcome and they teach you the most important lessons in life. I can’t think of anything that I would do differently. Just to learn more, make more mistakes and have even more fun whilst doing it.
What has surprised you most in your job? The importance of teamwork. I’m lucky to have an exceptionally talented team, and together, we have made a difference.
What exciting projects is your business working on? This year is hugely exciting for us, as we will see the most amount of investment that we have ever seen in the building. We have a solid strategy for continual improvement and we are currently working on our plans to host even more events by opening a dedicated events space. Millennium Point is in a great position. We are financially stable, have plans for growth and are soon to be on the doorstep of HS2 – it’s an exciting time!
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? We joined the Chamber as we wanted to connect with likeminded businesses and raise the profile of what we do. Our membership has allowed us to connect and share our exciting plans with some of the most renowned businesses across Birmingham. We’re also proud to be a patron
for Future Faces as it means we can continue to support and recognise young professionals across the city.
