School paves the way with new STEM facility
Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School expansion programme has taken another positive step with the opening of a new £3.1m Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teaching facility. The project was achieved as a result of a £2m
grant from the Education Funding Agency and a successful fundraising project ‘Growing Vesey, Growing Minds’ within the Vesey community to reach a target in excess of £1m.
‘This has been the largest construction project that the school has undertaken’
The new STEM block will add 16 classrooms to the school, including five new science laboratories, three ICT rooms and an ICT suite. In addition, there will be a robotics room, new mathematics classrooms and a girls sports changing facility.

delighted that our plans to expand our school roll and ensure that we continue to provide leading edge facilities to develop the scientists and engineers of the future have come to fruition.” The construction started in October 2015 but
has been planned since early 2014 as a result of demand for places at the school. Finance director and school business manager
Graham Swindells said: “This has been a complex undertaking from the initial feasibility and planning, through to bid writing, fundraising and then the completion of construction. “This has been the largest construction project
that the school has undertaken to date and we are thrilled the final result. This new facility will have a fantastic impact on all our students.” The project has also seen two Chamber members working together, with X2 Furniture providing all the loose furniture requirements.
Bake off: Hannah Fahy and some of the young bakers from Arthur Terry
Children raise the
cakes for charity Sweet-hearted Sutton Coldfield children have risen to the challenge of an inter-school cake design competition – raising thousands of pounds for charity. Creative students from Arthur Terry, Stockland
Green, Mere Green and Slade schools, overcame stiff competition from the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership’s seven schools, to win first and runner-up places (secondary and primary) as part of fundraising activities for Macmillan. The contest – which was open to the ATLP’s
4,500 students – saw youngsters decorate a variety of cakes, which were then sold in schools in aid of Macmillan’s coffee morning. Hannah Fahy, Macmillan’s fundraising manager
in Sutton Coldfield, said: “The children at the ATLP’s schools should feel really proud of themselves as £3,000 could pay for a Macmillan Nurse for three weeks.”
