GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

The Future of Marinas in a changing world

T

he recent 2016 World Marina Conference titled ‘The Future of Marinas in a changing world’ was very inspirationally

opened by the keynote speaker Adjiedj Bakas the renowned trendwatcher who soon had the audience fully engaged as he presented anecdote and indicators identifying the significant changes in the way younger generations are living their lives. He went on to explore how these new habits and ways of consuming will change the world around us and the way we live our lives. The audience were left in little doubt that the world is going through dramatic change which will have a significant impact on businesses worldwide. Bakas concluded his presentation by challenging marina owners to ‘invest in craziness’ and to ‘go where there is no path and leave a trail’. Following this TYHA coordinated

an afternoon of marina development presentations given by industry experts from across the globe. Our first 2 presentations, a case study from the Dutch Thuishavens group and a share economy presentation from Beds on Board, provided an insightful overview of how generational change is and will continue to demand change to marina business models. Nanke den Daas, MD of the

Thuishavens group delivered a fascinating presentation which summarised the work they have been doing to connect their marinas with the wider community, to engage with millennials and to find their future customers.

She described how they were investing in infrastructure and resources that connected newcomers to their marinas. Recognising that boat owners must start somewhere they have invested significantly in opening their doors to the whole community and welcoming them to spend their leisure time near and on the water at their marinas. Nankes presentation was brought to life on the marina tour on the last day of the conference when delegates saw first-hand the effort and investment that was changing Thuishavens marinas from ‘places to go boating from’ to ‘the place to go to’. A presentation from Tim Ludlow,

Director of Beds on Board, followed which gave the audience a clear understanding of how generational change and new ‘sharing’ ways of consuming such as Airbnb and Uber were having, and would continue to have, dramatic impacts on our way of life. Applied to marinas Tim outlined how their business and other share economy business brought opportunities to marinas amongst the challenges that we face in our changing world. Following this marina development

presentations were given by Tom Warren from Panuku Development Auckland and Gary Groenewold CMM from Westrec Marinas. Tom’s overview of the major

waterfront and marina development project being delivered through the Westhaven plan in Auckland, New Zealand provided a comprehensive picture of how the area has developed since the 1940’s, what it looks like today and what it will look like at

the end of the project. Gary continued the development theme showing the audience a fascinating start to finish presentation of the new 500 berth enclosed drystack facility in Florida designed to cater for motorboats up to 60 feet (18 meters) long in a building capable of withstanding a category 5 hurricane! Last but by no means least Kenny Jones (IGY Marinas), and Paul Cook (OneOcean Port Vell) presented a double act on the growing superyacht sector showing the scale of this area of the market and what owners, captains and crew are looking for. They gave a clear insight into their marina operations with a particular focus on how they ensure crew and their captains are looked after and kept happy and entertained. My thanks to all the above- mentioned speakers for their fascinating presentations and to James Beaver (Moffat and Nichol) and Alex Beere (MDL Consultancy) for hosting the open panel discussions. It was a great pleasure to meet

many members at the conference and for those that were not able to attend I look forward to seeing you in the coming months and if you are trying any new ways of attracting newcomers to your marina I would greatly appreciate you letting me know. In the meantime, and in the words of Adjiedj Bakas ‘invest in a little craziness’ you may be surprised with the outcome!
