PLACE-MAKING ST KATHARINE DOCKS

so close to the heart of the City of London. However, take a glance west and you’ll see the iconic Tower Bridge, which is over 100 years old. Or take a 5-minute stroll and you’re at The Tower of London, which is nearly 1,000 years old and one of the oldest standing buildings in the world. The refurbishment of the

marina, within the 3 separate dock basins, designed by the Victorian engineer Thomas Telford, is now 65% complete. With the central basin completed in time to welcome the famous Clipper Race fleet on 31st July, the west basin has now been partially handed over to St Katharine Docks Marina General Manager, Paul Tetlow. Works on the east basin
recently started and the marina will be completely refurbished by the end of January 2017. Throughout the refurbishment process the marina has remained largely operational and with careful planning, disruption has been kept to a minimum. Bill Green, Technical & Projects
Director at Camper & Nicholsons Marinas commented: “Operationally and aesthetically, the marina has seen dramatic improvements, with its new berth layout, more efficient use of the waterspace, safer and improved

services, and all round cleaner lines. We had a big job to do working around listed infrastructures, as well as overcoming the logistical problems of getting equipment in and out of a site that remained in the public domain. I am entirely grateful for the efforts of the contractors and project managers, who together have ensured that the completion of each phase of the works has been on time and on budget. Having to move boats around and carry out the works at the same time – all without too much disruption to berth holders, local residents, commercial tenants and visitors has been a challenge. It is probably one of the most satisfying projects I have been involved in” The involvement of top
industry experts and suppliers saw to it that the changes made gave the historic docks a new lease of life. The main contract was
delivered by Poralu, a well- established marina construction company with experience at an international level. Inland & Coastal, an Irish pontoon manufacturer was contracted by Poralu to provide components and labour for the installation at St Katharine Docks. Not only this, but they provided the floating plant and transport logistics to remove and replace all the pontoons. Bill Green, Technical & Projects Director at Camper & Nicholsons Marinas commented:
“Inland & Coastal are a great team and their contribution has been invaluable. We are delighted that Poralu sub-contracted them so they could collaborate to create the very best pontoons with concrete floats. They’ve done a fantastic job.” The modern marina layout designed by Camper & Nicholsons Marinas, the new pontoons, and services installed by Maricer, have come together to give the whole place a more premium, luxury look & feel.
