UK NEWS Investment in local

wildlife habitats This autumn, Suffolk Yacht Harbour funded an important project on the Levington Lagoon Nature Reserve, which is located on the harbour site. Suffolk Yacht Harbour worked closely with the Suffolk Wildlife Trust who carried out work to improve wildlife habitats in the area. Andrew Excell, South East Suffolk Sites Manager

takes up the story, "An experienced wetland contractor slubbed out vegetation and silt from the lagoon and island in order to provide a more suitable breeding and roosting habitat for bird species using the reserve. Island margins have also been re-profiled to create soft muddy margins for feeding waders.”

Andrew continues, “The work will benefit key breeding wading birds such as redshank, avocet and lapwing, and will provide a valuable roost for larger numbers of birds requiring rest while the estuary mudflats and saltings are covered.” Suffolk Wildlife Trust has also been forage

harvesting the grassland habitat between the lagoon and Suffolk Yacht Harbour. Andrew says, “The shorter cut grass areas will

provide good conditions for breeding birds such as the skylark. This work also helps to promote greater botanical richness by removing the more dominant grass species, and allowing smaller plants to establish. “We are extremely grateful to SYH for its ongoing support of the local area and wildlife.”

Aquila goes to sea

Suffolk Yacht Harbour has recently undertaken a refit conversion of the nearly new 27ft GRP motor boat Aquila from inland specification to a full seagoing coastal vessel. The project included installation of 180hp Nanni diesel engine, a bow thruster and opening screen windows. Extensive teak deck work was carried out with teak laid on the deck, cockpit coamings, sole and the cockpit itself.

Aquila’s owner commented, “I had heard of Suffolk Yacht Harbour’s good reputation for refit work and they have certainly

delivered; I am delighted with Aquila’s transformation.” Aquila also underwent a fully refurbished interior, including spray application of Awlgrip to interior gelcoat surfaces, and a complete refurbishment of the galley, including Corian work surfaces and galley equipment. Suffolk Yacht Harbour boat

yard services manager, Joshua Major, added, “Aquila is one of the most extensive motor boat projects we have done at Suffolk Yacht Harbour. The refit has been comprehensive, involving a wide range of skills and collaboration with our onsite partner businesses.” The Suffolk Yacht Harbour team also installed electric heads and full navigation packages,

upgraded the batteries and installed a stainless Holdfast anchor and stem protection plate. All gelcoat surfaces were resurfaced and Boot top and antifoul were applied. Aquila will head back to the south coast to her home on the Beaulieu River for coastal cruising.
