The vegetable garden is historically accurate.

Danish vegetable gardens had lots of cabbage.

form a floral image of Denmark’s flag. In addition to the flowerbeds of Asiatic lilies, towering delphiniums, stun- ning Dragon’s Blood sedum and other plants are vegetable gardens that grow many of the varieties planted in the 1900s. A herb garden of dill, tarragon, hyssop, mint, pars- ley and chives grows from seeds donated by the Danish Canadian Society. The grounds include many other distinctly Danish

features: a bust of Hans Christian Andersen leads through the dappled underbrush; the tiny Dagmar Church is used for a museum and gardens honour Danish heritage weddings and special occasions. A statue of the Little Mermaid looks over the pond just like the famous one in Copenhagen. For Danes and all other nationalities, the words of Hans

Christian Andersen would seem to sum up the essence of this Danish showplace: “Just living is not enough, one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower.” x

Traditional-style rock garden beds built up in front of the shelterbelt.

This tall traditional herb is used in soups.
