nal formal, circle beds, three in the formal garden and two near the house, are planted as carpet beds using histori- cally accurate annuals in geometric patterns, as was the style of the day. This past year, under the guidance of head gardener, Marie Gattinger, the British and Canadian flags were recreated in two of the formal garden beds in honour of the 125th anniversary of the construction of Lougheed House. The other formal garden features colours emblem- atic of rooms in the house. A memorial garden to Peter Lougheed was also completed recently on the west side of the house and features a flowering crab tree. Other new additions include a children’s garden, also on

the west side of the house. It features miniature versions of flowers on the property such as teddy bear sunflowers, sweet peas and miniature snap dragons growing among birdhouse ornaments made by garden volunteers. Butterfly friendly flowers, a mud-bath and bright red butterfly house are also great attractions for the children. Vegetables and edibles such as miniature tomatoes and plants inspired by children’s fables have also been added, for example scarlet runner beans for Jack and the Beanstalk. Lougheed House is more than just a sanctuary of peace
and beauty in the middle of Calgary, it now offers commu- nity programming for all ages, interpretive tours, events, and exhibitions. The museum shop is a treasure trove of interesting keepsakes and the restaurant offers lovely local fare to culminate a visit. x
