Rosybloom Crabapple exploding in blossom. Percival Duncan Hargrave (1909—1992) Grandson of pioneer James Hargrave, Duncan
Hargrave was born and educated in Edmonton, major- ing in horticulture at the University of Alberta, where he earned his bachelor and master of science degrees. At age 27, he was appointed assistant superintendent
at the provincial horticultural research station at Brooks, and served as superintendent from 1943 to 1970. A beloved figure through his career there, Duncan
Hargrave won a string of awards for his contribution to horticulture and was a driving force in building Brooks into a widely respected research institution. His tenure, and inspiration, saw the bare, mostly open
prairie of the region transformed into an area of abun- dant bush and trees. In a citation over 35 years ago, one of Hargrave’s peers noted that he had served on practical- ly every committee involved with horticulture in Alberta and chaired many others. His own research specialty was in prairie ecology and field crop production. He wrote many publications and travelled all over Alberta giving lectures and demonstrations. Hargrave introduced, or was closely involved with,
the development of four apples, two Manchurian plums, various plum hybrids, one pear, several apricot seedlings, a weeping pincherry, three rosybloom crabapples, a white saskatoon, a yellow buffaloberry, Waterton mock orange and three tomato varieties.
