The Rutherford’s used the garden to entertain on a regular basis.

indoors for several years until it was mature enough to move outside. The lilac was placed on the east side of home and, while it is no longer there, white lilacs were planted on either side of the home’s front steps in commemoration of that tree. Mrs. Rutherford enjoyed fresh herbs

from the garden for her cooking and was famous for adding a sprig of scent- ed geranium to the top of her jams. She preferred prettier distractions in

the garden and her favourite flowers were pink roses, carnations and tulips. However, she also enjoyed many tradi- tional flowers of the time such as sweet

peas, pink peonies, bleeding hearts, sweet William, daylilies and daisies, purple asters and irises, phlox, stocks, nasturtiums, pansies, ferns and lilacs. Hazel recalls her mother’s affection for growing mignonette, red amaryllis, aspidistras, begonias and geraniums as well.
