Rutherford House


Premier gardens of Alberta’s history Photos and story by Tania Moffat


T


he 105-year-old post-Edwardian-style brick mansion nestled near the university campus was once the home of Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first


premier of Alberta, his wife Mattie and two children, Cecil and Haze. The couple also had a third child, Marjo- rie, who died during infancy and prior to their move into this home. Rutherford purchased 1.3 acres of land in May 1909 and the family moved into their new home in 1911 during the frosty month of February. Much of the surrounding area was farmland and bush.


Their nearest neighbour, the University of Alberta, had begun constructing buildings nearby including what was to become Old St. Stephen’s College and Athabasca Hall. The property did receive shelter from spruce trees which


surrounded the property to offer privacy and respite from the harsh winter winds. However, for avid gardeners like Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford, the property was destined to have several gardens. The grounds were designed to include

a garden terrace and low stone wall made from stones from the Rutherfords’ first property in Mill Creek where they had framed the front of the house. The terrace, stone wall and steps still remain today. The carriage sweep, or driveway, contained a beautiful


flower garden and grove of trees, with two rectangular shaped gardens leading up to the house welcoming visi- tors. Both Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford enjoyed working in the garden; he favoured growing vegetables while she adored her flowers. Their home was always filled with friends and relatives


in the family’s typically hospitable style. The gardens were a source of pride and ideal for outdoor entertaining. Given his political stature, the Rutherfords hosted many formal social functions as well as family parties and picnics with their dogs. Mrs. Rutherford enjoyed decorating their home with freshly cut flowers from the garden and during special
