IAFE Director at Large Russ Harrison

It has been an honor and a pleasure to

serve on the IAFE board as a Director at Large for concessions. I was fortunate to have served with Jim Tucker and Marla Calico during my term. The IAFE offers many benefits for asso-

ciate members including: The Annual Convention. The conven- tion offers the largest trade show in our industry for associate members to display their services. It also produces many educa- tional workshops for associate members. Many networking opportunities are available for associate

members to socialize with fair management and other associate members. It also brings all the industry trade associations together under

one roof. 2) The IAFE offers opportunities for fairs and associate members to work together on important issues like Trans- fer of Ownership, exclusive sponsorships, Cost of Opera- tions, & Contract management to name a few.

3) Combined with NICA, OABA, State & showmen’s clubs the IAFE offers us a larger voice on issues like foreign labor. Our industry has become so dependent on foreign labor, that without it many carnivals and independent con- cessionaires would not be able to operate.

4) The IAFE staff is very dedicated to its members and serves as an advocate & educator to help us preserve our way of life.

NEWS FROM ZONE TWO and YOUR ZONE TWO DIRECTOR NANCY SMITH, CFE

Greetings Zone 2 Friends, As I write this column, we are now less than 2 weeks away from

opening of the South Carolina State Fair. Some of you fair friends have celebrated your big event earlier, some recently and some, like SC, are soon to be. Fair Blessings to all! After our fair seasons, it is “R” evolution” time – at the IAFE Annual

Convention in Las Vegas, November 27-30. You may have missed the early bird registration but it’s not too late to register and check out the program

and all the educational/networking

(www.fairsandexpos.com ). You may have already heard about ‘Raisin’ For A Reason’ (formerly

known as the “Wine & Dine”) to benefit the IAFE Education Founda- tion. Mark your IAFE Convention calendar for Sunday, November 27 from 6PM-8PM. Wear your favorite sports team gear and join the fun! We’ll be meeting at an amazing new destination and ‘Raise some Fun – Bucks for a good Reason.” Hope to see you there. Speaking of the IAFE Education Foundation, it is now time to con-

gratulate our very own Zone 2 YIP Scholarship recipients. Congratula- tions go out to Andrea Simeone from the South Florida Fair in West Palm Beach and Suzanne Holcomb from the Greater Hillsborough County Fair in Sydney. These young ladies each received a $1,000 scholarship to attend the IAFE convention. Ladies, those of us who have previously attended a convention can say you are in for a real educational experience, both from a programming and networking as- pect. CONGRATULATIONS! Our Zone 2 Membership Chair, Vicki Chouris, is still rounding her

folks up to increase our IAFE membership. She has assembled a Zone 2 team, with representatives from each state. If you know someone asso- ciated with our industry that is not a member, please encourage them to join. Plus – you get to put your name into a drawing for some great prizes. As I bring my column to a close (and you are saying finally!!) I can’t

too many others are granted. September 27 marked the 100th birthday of my “mama,” Mary Swygert Smith. Mama has known part of World War I, the Great Depression, World War II and more. She has seen and known much “change” and, even with many bumps along the way, continued to thrive through it all. The 850 cookies and 8 pound cakes she made for her own party are just a glimpse into her remarkable life. May our “fair industry eyes” be focused in such a direction and with such determination.

help but recall our most astute current IAFE Chair, Kent Hojem’s words in our F&E magazine. Kent was speaking on the “popularity” of revolution and how change is so critical to our industry. I would ven- ture to say we have all experienced these “change pains” from time to time. I would also bet many of us have been the recipients of the growth and blessings of change. May we have open minds and visions for the future, both for our industry and ourselves. On a personal note, my family and I just had an opportunity that not
