Fairly Important Matters

FARM BUREAU AND FAIRS—IMPORTANT PARTNERS! Florida Farm Bureau Federation has been an active supporter of local fairs and

agricultural shows since its founding in 1941. Our involvement has ranged from financial contributions to the volunteer management of fair events. Farm Bureau members have been leaders in fundraising for fair organizations.

They also serve as mentors for young people who raise show animals and devel- op exhibits for evaluation at fairs. Our members provide money and other tangi- ble assistance to maintain programs at FFA chapters and 4-H clubs. Many of the young people who participate in these local groups also compete in animal shows held during fair schedules.

In addition to providing consistent local support, through our statewide Florida Farm Bureau Federation

our members have made major gifts to youth education initiatives associated with fairs. These donations help underwrite livestock show competitions at the Florida State Fair. They led and completed a project to construct a new Florida FFA headquarters on the Florida Farm Bureau campus in Gainesville. Their con- tributions to both Florida FFA and the Florida 4-H Foundation have substantially enhanced educational and training opportunities for young people – including their fair experiences. Farm Bureau people view fairs as venues that can help promote understanding about contemporary agriculture. Demonstrations

with live plants and animals introduce non-farmers to the reality of food production. They also illustrate the care farm people offer their food animals and the excellent natural resource conservation practices implemented on agricultural properties in Florida.
