Florida Fair News - Storm Page Florida Fairs helping in preparation and

aftermath of Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew Who/what fairs were boarding animals as a safety shelter during the storm?

After an informal inquiry, this is what we found out: Lake County Fair: I believe LCSO is working with the fair-

grounds for overflow holding of livestock, if the need arises. I wouldn't call it "sheltering." Pensacola: The National Guard and Gulf Power Company use

our fairgrounds during hurricanes but not lined up for Animal Safety Hillsborough is a shelter.

The Miami-Dade County Youth Fair & Exposition’s E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion serves as a shelter for Miami-Dade County and Monroe County residents and their pets in case of a voluntary or mandatory evacuation due to a natural or man-made emergen- cy. Our Fuchs Pavilion is approximately 50,000 square feet in size. In preparation for and during Hurricane Matthew’s impact,

Miami-Dade County’s Emergency Management of course acti- vated the Fuchs Pavilion. Over the course of the last couple of days, approximately 80 Miami-Dade County residents (and their pets) took advantage of the shelter provided within the Fuchs Pavilion. The County closed the Fuchs Pavilion as a shelter at approximately 6:00 a.m. this morning (October 7). We here in Miami-Dade County were indeed blessed that the

storm’s impact on our community was far, far less than what our fellow Floridians and visitors to our state are experiencing to the north. In terms of a final count related to M-DC residents and pets

that availed themselves of the emergency shelter M-DC set-up in our Fuchs Pavilion. On site M-DC officials made the decision to allow residents

without pets to also avail themselves of the shelter. Okeechobee: Sorry, we don’t have the facilities. Hendry County Fair can if need be. We are high and dry and

out of the woods for now. The Citrus County Fair is a designated large animal shelter

with our county. We are not being used at this time, but are ready if needed. Citrus County is only getting a little rain and wind., however during Hermine the western part of the county was declared a disaster due to severe flooding. SW Florida and Lee County Fair Association has sheltered

approximately 30 horses from the East Coast because of the storm. Although KVLS itself does not shelter any animals, the county opens our park (Osceola Heritage Park) to animals. Many are housed at the Silver Spurs location and Multipurpose Building here on site. The KVLS building would be back up and is a des- ignated shelter, as needed, but is last on the list. However, at that point, Osceola County would be in charge of the operations, not us.

Greater Jacksonville Ag Fair: While the fairgrounds sustained

minor damage, overall they came through the hurricane in great shape. All employees also incurred minor or no damage on their homes. They will be ready to open November 2nd as scheduled. The North Florida Fairgrounds was used slightly during Hurri- cane Matthew. Not in the sense of staging large equipment or

large animal rescue or the traditional manner. We were contacted by a number of RVers looking for a place to stay during the storm while they fled the dangerous area. We were happy to ac- commodate their requests. When Hurricane Hermine hit Talla- hassee we lost a couple of trees and a ticket booth was blown over. Also a skylight was lost in one building. Very minor dam- age.

South Florida Fair prepared their storm shelter as seen in the photos below.
