Santa Rosa, CA. ~ I knew in an in- stant when Wallace (Wally) Schil- pp walked into the cafe for our interview with his Road Scholar cap on. He exuded the quiet confi dence that I expected from a man who I had been advised is con- sidered by many to be the “elder statesman” of Oak- mont, an active adult com- munity that is home to over 4500 residents in Santa Rosa.

Born in Stockton, Cali- fornia on October 5, 1932 to Paul and Louise Schil- pp, Wally’s family of six moved to Evanston, Illinois when he was a young child, where his father, a

professor of Philosophy, taught at Northwestern University.

kin, in many ways Wally grew up as an only child. And an experi- ence-rich childhood it was! Soon

During his visit, young Wally overheard a discussion between Russell and his mother, in which Russell asked whether his “bath had been drawn,” to which his mother quipped, “Lord Russell, in this country people draw their own baths.” Moments later, there was a tap on

On another occasion, Profes-

sor Schilpp asked eleven year old Wally to shovel the driveway while he picked up Professor Albert Ein- stein. Einstein, like Russell, was being interviewed for his father’s Library of Living Philosophers book series. When the car pulled up on that cold, snowy day, Wally ran outside with his shovel, and was astonished to discover that Einstein was only wearing fl annel

bedroom slippers. As would be ex- pected of an eleven year old, Wally simply asked, “Dr. Einstein, where are your shoes?” to which Einstein replied that he hadn’t worn shoes in over 15 years because he would have to put on socks and tie his shoes, and that took too much time! phers, Wally also remembered reg- ular household visits from mem- bers of the Chicago Symphony (his father played violin and had been a choir master in California), and music would fi ll the air. His father also held a regular open house on Friday evenings from 7 PM into the wee hours of the morn- ing, where Northwestern students would gather at their home to dis- cuss philosophy. After World War II, The Schipps opened their home in a different way: by fi nancially sponsoring a Japanese family for several years who had lived in an Internment Camp during the war, while two older siblings were required to serve, and one died, in Europe dur- ing the confl ict. Wally also remem- bered how neighbors looked down upon them for doing so. Similar in age, he spent several years attend- ing school with their son, Norman
