Annual event is already a sell-out

New commissioner

is fighting crime Well-known ABCC member Waheed Saleem (pictured) has a major new string to his bow – in the shape of a seat on the board of a key West Midlands police committee. Waheed, a former chairman of the Birmingham-based Lunar Society, has been appointed to the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Strategic Policing and Crime Board. And he said he was determined to help tackle Birmingham’s gun crime in his new role. “There are a lot of challenges over crime in the West Midlands, and the biggest issues are guns and gangs, and the number of gun-related crimes in the Birmingham area. “That, and anti-social behaviour, is a very significant issue for the local community. Terrorism and extremist crime is also an issue for a percentage of the community. “It is good to have the Police and Crime

Commissioner’s commitment to increasing the number of police officers. My appointment is an important role, and I am looking forward to making my own contribution to the wider team effort.”

Asian Business Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) prestigious annual awards and dinner has sold out – an astonishing four months ahead of the actual presentation evening. The awards will be presented at a glittering

event at the International Convention Centre on 19 November. ABCC president Saqib Bhatti said: “It is a

great achievement to sell out again for our flagship dinner and it shows how buoyant the regional economy is at the moment. “Our dinner is the premier event on the Asian

business calendar and once again we will have the finest businesspeople from across the region in attendance. To do this a third year in a row is a testament to hard work that my board do along with the ABCC director, Anjum Khan, and her team. I am looking forward to a fun evening in November.”

‘Nominations are now open for the six categories’

The awards are open to any business in the

West Midlands, not just ABCC members. Nominations are now open for the six categories, which are: start-up of the year, small business, large business, woman of the year, customer service and contribution to society. Mr Bhatti added: “The ABCC is proud to

launch the annual dinner awards. These are really prestigious awards that are highly sought

The Chamber helps to celebrate Eid in style

Asian Business Chamber of Commerce held a successful Eid event at Solihull’s Ramada hotel recently. The festival of Eid is a celebration of the end

of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. The Chamber event attracted a wide range of

guests, who were able to take part in a networking session during the evening, as well as hearing from a number of speakers, including Eric Williams of Mazars, Liz Bertie, sales manager at the Ramada, and Rob Noble of The Leadership Trust, sponsors of the event. A rather different Eid event took place at the

same time in Small Heath Park, which attracted tens of thousands of people. Organised by Green Lane Masjid &

Community Centre, Celebrate Eid is now in its sixth year and has grown in popularity since its first major event in 2012, where 12,000 people attended. Last year’s event saw 60,000 take part in the celebrations.
