hen you look at the list of clinics - spirometry, flu and travel, diabetes, chronic
medication, healthy
hearts....it’s not difficult to see why Bernadette Brown was the worthy winner of this year’s Pharmacist of the Year award!
But there is one aspect of Bernadette’s work at Cadham Pharmacy - and beyond - that has placed her pharmacy at the forefront of primary care in her local area. While Prescription for Excellence may intend to put community pharmacy

at the forefront of healthcare in local communities, Bernadette has for the last two years - but particularly in the last twelve months, completely altered the way in which the public who use her pharmacy view community pharmacy in general and clinical pharmacists in particular.
Put simply, the local community in Glenrothes view the pharmacy as an extension of the local GP practice and as a healthcare clinical practice in its own right.
Thanks to a lot of hard work on the part of both Bernadette and her team, they have created a truly inspiring pharmacy culture and environment in order to have the right clinical feel to provide the clinics and diagnostic services now on offer. Even more amazingly, this has all been done with no additional funding...
‘To me, the drive and passion to deliver enhanced care in the right environment is crucial after working for many years in primary care,’ Bernadette tells SP, ‘and wanting to
bring that professional, confidential atmosphere to the heart of the community. With our last consultation room completed in April, the full range of clinics is now on offer and having our nursing team on board gives a truly NHS practice feel to the pharmacy.’
Bernadette is passionate about the Vision of Pharmacy and works closely with local GP colleagues to help start building up caseloads within the CMS framework. This has proved to be a great platform to doing the
