As the healthcare professional readily accessible to the public on a daily basis, you, as a community pharmacist, are in
2013 study on schizophrenia by Wood et al found that, among the factors that
a prime position to provide this ‘support and understanding’, in addition to the standard medication provision and advice.
In 2013, however, a Scottish PhD student carried out research into the experiences of patients with schizophrenia with regard to pharmacy services, and the responses were mixed.
On the positive side there were responses, such as:
‘In small community chemists the service can be really good – there is often a relationship and good conversation.’
‘I can’t fault the pharmacy; they are always willing to speak. If I have new medicines the pharmacist always asks, ‘Is this a new medicine? Do you need advice?’ Whenever I go in to get them they are ready on time.’
There were, however, less positive remarks:
‘When you read the leaflets, they are too confusing. The pharmacist writes down everything without telling you about the probability of side effects.’
‘In community pharmacies, we need to be sure that our privacy is protected, both from other people becoming aware that we are taking psychiatric medication and also in revealing personal details about ourselves.’
So, what can a schizophrenic patient gain from their local community pharmacist?
