Pharmacist of the Future Award Supported by Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen and University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

Lara Seymour, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen T

he Pharmacist of the Future Award is presented to a student who has demonstrated ‘knowledge, enthusiasm, commitment and potential to make a real difference to the pharmacy profession on graduation’, and who has demonstrated ‘significant commitment to citizenship while still at university’. One glance at the CV of Lara Seymour from Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Aberdeen will clearly show why this inspiring young pharmacist was the recipient of this year’s award.

44 - SCOTTISH PHARMACIST

Here, Lara tells us about one of the major projects she became involved in at RGU and which was one of the factors behind her win.

In 2014, after winning the Annual PLEA essay competition, Lara decided to start a Pharmacy Law and Ethics Group (PLE) at RGU.

‘I felt,’ Lara tells SP, ‘that, although this subject is taught well, there is the potential to engage more students with ethical issues in pharmacy to

increase awareness and improve critical thinking with the overall aim of producing a higher standard of pharmacists in the future.

‘I started by emailing fellow pharmacy students about who would be interested in starting such a group. I only had a few replies but I didn’t let that stop me! I was aware that Aston University has a lecturer that specifically teaches pharmacy law and ethics (Chris Langley) and I asked him to come to RGU to do a talk.

I was worried about the turnout but, thankfully, many students made the effort to come along. This highlighted that there was indeed a need and a desire for the subject.

‘At the same time, I had begun researching the Assisted Dying Bill in Scottish Parliament. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for the students to host their own debate. Firstly, I contacted Aileen Bryson at RPS to ask if she would be interested in chairing the debate.
