RECENT REFIT LEADS TO NEW 'BUZZ'!
WHEN WILLIAM WYLIE TOOK OVER PARKER PHARMACY IN THE SQUARE IN COMBER JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, HE KNEW THAT HE WOULD BE MAKING MAJOR CHANGES. areas of the shop.
‘As with any contractor who takes over an established pharmacy, you need to take some time to settle in and get into the way the pharmacy works,’ William told PiF, ‘but I knew that, once organised, I would want to put my own stamp on the place.
‘My intentions for the pharmacy were pretty clear pretty quickly. The pharmacy has a very loyal and well-established patient/customer base, so I wanted to provide a new, improved pharmacy service for them in a brighter, lighter environment, but I also wanted to offer an extended range of products.’
Once William had settled into the new business and made his observations on what he wished to change, he contacted established pharmacy outfi tters, Concept.
‘Concept were able to guide me through the overall process,’ William continues. ‘I would say the choices and decisions were about 50/50, so the eventual outcome was a hybrid of the two.
‘The fi rst thing we did was to remove the ‘terracotta effect’ wood, which dominated the pharmacy, and replace it with a material called ‘ice white’, which immediately brightened up the whole shop. We also replaced the shelving with a similar material.
‘We introduced much brighter lighting, which, since they are LED lights, has brought the added benefi t of energy effi ciency, and we placed strategic LED spotlights in particular
‘We also introduced signage indicating, for example, the fi rst aid shelves and the household shelves. When this concept was fi rst proposed to me, I have to say that I wasn’t 100 per cent sure about it, but I have to say that the patients have told me how much they really appreciate the new signage, so obviously I had underestimated the effect that it would have.
‘When I fi rst took over the pharmacy, it became apparently very quickly that the rear door was being underused. As a result, I introduced the idea of both doors being kept open at all times, and placed a hot air curtain over the front door. Many of the patients have told me that this has added to the appeal of the pharmacy, and that it not only seems bigger as a result of the lighting, but is so welcoming with the doors open that it just makes them want to come in even more.’
Since the refi t was completed just over a month ago, William has introduced new retail lines such as Crabtree & Evelyn and Ted Baker, and celebrated the refi t with a Facebook-led campaign of ‘a new range introduced every day for 40 days’.
‘There’s no doubt that that footfall has increased big time,’ William said. ‘There’s a real buzz about the place and a lot of the patients have said that it’s been like a breath of fresh air for the town. I’m glad to hear it!’
