SEMINAR
THE NEXT STEP FOR PRE-REGS:
THE PRACTICALITIES OF THE PROFESSION
ONCE THE REGISTRATION EXAM IS OVER, IT’S TIME FOR PRE-REGS TO TURN THEIR THOUGHTS TO THE WORLD OF EMPLOYMENT AND ALL THAT THAT ENTAILS…
T
his year’s Ulster Chemists’ Association’s ‘Life After Registration’ seminar and
recruitment event took place on Saturday 11 June 2016 at the Wellington Park Hotel in Belfast.
All pre-regs in Northern Ireland are invited to this event, following the registration exam and the morning features presentations on topics such as: applying for jobs, CV and interview skills, as well as insurance, working as a locum, and personal and business finance. Pharmacies, academia and other colleagues also host information stands and are available to speak to

trainees about various professional issues and career opportunities.
Around 40 pre-regs gathered at the hotel on the morning of 11 June for this year’s event – the ninth annual seminar to have been held – and to hear a series of presentations on all aspects of working in pharmacy.
WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION The seminar was opened by the current UCA President, Cliff McElhinney from Urban Pharmacy in Belfast.
Cliff began by welcoming the pre-regs
along to the event and congratulated them on completing their exams. He reminded them that, despite the fact that they had all worked very hard to have reached this critical stage, it was now time for the ‘hard work’ to begin and for life as a fully-fledged pharmacist to begin.
LIFE AS A PHARMACIST: THE PRACTICALITIES Cliff was followed by Mairead Conlon, Representation Pharmacist from the UCA, who gave a wide-ranging and interesting talk about her own career in pharmacy, which has – to say the least – been varied.
In her very interesting presentation Mairead took the pre-regs through various aspects of working as a locum, and showed - through illustrations from her own career – how pharmacy is much more wide-ranging than simply being about dispensing in a community pharmacy setting.
From sensible advice on subjects such as registering as self employed with Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, to designing the most successful business cards, to taking along your own Responsible Pharmacist display, pre-regs were busy scribbling away taking down Mairead’s words of extremely practical advice.
Mairead also took this opportunity to tell the pre-regs about the work of the Ulster Chemists’ Association: about the business support which the organisation provides, the events that take place during the year, the new website and about the new Pharmacist Representation Group that’s currently
