WELCOME

‘THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING’ SANG BOB DYLAN AND HIS WORDS HAVE CERTAINLY RUNG TRUE IN NI HEALTHCARE OVER

THE LAST FEW WEEKS. On a national level we’ve just had Brexit, leaving the country in a state of ‘no man’s land’, with no-one quite sure what’s ahead and debate over the much discussed £350m being put back into the NHS taking up quite a few column centimetres in the press. Interesting times indeed.

On a local level we now have a new Health Minister, Michelle O’Neill MLA. No sooner had Simon Hamilton MLA got into his stride and implemented some of the most groundbreaking moves seen in healthcare here for some years, than he’s gone. But that’s NI politics and we wish the new Minister well in her role. Hopefully Hamilton’s ‘get things moving’ attitude will be adopted in a similar fashion by Ms O’Neill.

Despite the pervading atmosphere of change and uncertainty over the way ahead, there’s no doubt about the fast-paced change and innovation that’s currently happening on the NI pharmacy scene.

initiative is currently at interview stage, with the fi rst tranche in post by probably September. While some community pharmacists have expressed some concern about the impact on their business, most seem to be of the opinion that, if applied in the correct manner, the initiative will be a win-win for pharmacy in general: an opinion shared by both Glynis McMurtry, Pharmacist Co-ordinator for GP Federations and practice-based pharmacist, Sean McGeown (p16).

Northern Ireland’s prowess in the fi eld of medicines optimisation is enhancing our reputation not only nationally, but globally. PiF recently visited the Medicines Optimisation Innovation Centre (MOIC) in Antrim to speak to Professor Mike Scott about how much has been achieved (p10).

With local councillors now involved in community planning, William McCaughey from Kells and Connor Pharmacy, who is also a councillor, tells PiF how pharmacy will be impacted in months to come (p58).

Meanwhile, in the midst of change, the work of Building Community Pharmacy Partnership carries on quietly in the background, with community pharmacists facilitating a wide range of schemes, which are all designed to improve health and wellbeing in their local community. In this issue we visit Carrickfergus YMCA, where pharmacists from Woodburn and Sunnylands pharmacies are working with local groups spanning the age spectrum (p41).
