SEMINAR being formed (see page 46).
Mairead concluded her talk by telling the pre regs that their sole aim in qualifying should be to promote the continuity of, or enhance the standard of care that’s already being provided.
FINANCIAL ADVICE
Laura Kane, Relationship Banker at First Trust bank was next up. Laura focussed on everything from online banking to getting what she called ‘mortgage ready’.
Laura took the pre-regs through the wide range of banking products available and also looked at the many and varied banking channels that are available today – everything from online banking to mobile banking to social media and, of course, the good old branch option.
Laura fi nished her presentation by considering the reasons why those present should be looking to First Trust Bank for their wide range of banking products. A highly practical and informative presentation.
Before presenting the bursary, Ashley said that although the amount of work that had been put into this year’s entries had been amazing, there was no doubt that the winner was out in front by a serious margin.
‘The winner’s project stood head and shoulders above the rest,’ Ashley said, ‘primarily because they had a clearly- defi ned target group and measurable objectives and, as such, had been able to assess the effectiveness of the project against objectives and outcomes.’

Laura then announced the winner – Matthew Cosgrove – who, unfortunately, hadn’t been able to attend the event. Nevertheless, well done to Matthew!
BURSARY PRESENTATION Once she had fi nished her presentation, Laura was joined on the platform by Ashley Boreland from PCM Associates to present the Bursary Award: a £500 award that’s presented each year by the First Trust Bank to a pre-reg who had impressed with the high quality of their project.
FINANCIAL SIDE OF LOCUMING Once the excitement of the Bursary Award was over, it was the turn of Robbie Barr from Muldoon & Company, Chartered Accountants, to speak to the pre-regs.
Robbie gave the pre-regs a highly informative and entertaining presentation on the fi nancial and legal aspects of working as a locum: from keeping records, to paying tax, to preparing accounts. Of particular note was the list which Robbie provided to the pre-regs of the items which they can claim as business- related expenses, such as offi ce and travel costs, clothing expenses (ie, uniforms), and a proportion of home costs.
JOB SEEKING:
THE PROFESSIONAL APPROACH Last to take centre stage on what had been a highly informative and practical morning, was Ashley Boreland. This time Ashley spoke to the pre-regs about the professional approach to getting a job in pharmacy.
Ashley covered various aspects
of the recruitment process: from researching a prospective employer, to body language during an interview and to fi lling in application forms correctly. In addition to the positive aspects of applying for jobs, Ashley also highlighted the major ‘no-nos’ that can make people fail to make the second interview stage, such as making up exciting hobbies and interests, text speaking, waffl ing for Ireland and failing to focus on personal grooming and appearance.
There’s no doubt that the pre-regs’ attitude to the morning’s seminar was that they had had heard about the ‘practical’ side of working in pharmacy, rather than about the ‘theory’ and everyone felt that this had been both useful and productive.
INFORMATION STANDS Once the formalities were over, the pre-regs were able to take advantage of the various information stands which had been set up outside the seminar room by First Trust Bank, Boots Ltd, Lloyds, Queen’s University and Pharmaconex. •
