The new man behind the Midlands Engine

Sir John Peace (pictured), the chairman of both Standard Chartered plc and Burberry Group plc, has been appointed to take over the helm of the Midlands Engine – the partnership which aims to drive up productivity and growth across the whole of the Midlands region from the Marches to the Wash. Sir John, the son of a Nottinghamshire miner, is also

to continue in his role as chairman of Midlands Connect, which is developing a transport strategy to improve the connectivity of the region’s key locations.

‘The Midlands Engine is a compelling opportunity to better represent the Midlands region, attract significant new investment and create more jobs’

His appointment as chairman of Midlands Engine was announced by Business Secretary Sajid Javid, who said: “Sir John’s business leadership experience and continued commitment to Midlands Connect will drive forward exactly what we want to achieve with the Midlands Engine.” With his extensive business experience across both

the financial and retail sectors, Sir John has the ideal background to drive the region’s vision. In his new role he will be supported by a Strategic Supervisory Group composed of representatives from local authorities,

business, universities, and an executive, which will work together to define, drive forward and communicate the Midlands Engine ambitions. Sir John said: “The Midlands Engine is a

compelling opportunity to better represent the Midlands region, attract significant new investment and create more jobs. A huge amount of work has already been done by stakeholders from both the private and public sectors with the aim of growing the wider Midlands economy, and as the newly appointed chairman I will do my best to make this very exciting vision become a reality.” Since the Business Secretary launched

the Midlands Engine’s initial plans in December of last year, the partnership has been working with businesses, universities, colleges and the public sector to deliver its ambition to create 300,000 new jobs and generate an additional £34 billion by 2030. The Business Secretary added: “These

are exciting times for the Midlands - the economy is growing, businesses are thriving and inward investment is up. By capitalising on the region’s assets under Sir John Peace’s leadership, the Midlands can become even greater than the sum of its parts.”
