BROTHERS COMATOSE
by Michael Buffalo Smith I caught up with Ben Morrison of Brothers
Comatose while they were driving through ice and snow covered mountains early this year. The string band is on their way to becoming a household name, and their new album, City Painted Gold should only add to their rapid rise.
So Ben, house life on the road? It’s insane. There’s ice all over the road. There’s snow everywhere. We’re driving from Laramie, Wyoming to Denver and it’s pretty crazy conditions out here.
Oh my! Well, be safe. Whatever you do, stay safe. We should probably not be driving through it but,uh… we’re trying to make it to a show.
That’s how devoted you are to your craft. That it is.
Well, I first heard about Brothers Com- atose from some friends of mine in Phoenix, Arizona, Jared and Lindsey Knights. They’re big fans of you guys and they’ve been telling me about you for quite a while. Very cool.
WIDE AWAKE WITH THE FRISCO STRING BAND
How and when did Brothers Comatose come into being? Well, my brother’s in the band, he plays banjo. We kind of started playing back in the day, just kind of sitting around the living room. We met Gio Benedetti, our bass player,
back in high school. We were freshmen in high school class together and when we started the band a couple years after high school, we just asked Gio because he had an upright bass, so we brought him in to play some bass. We found Phillip Brezina playing fiddle at the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco, and Ryan Avellone, who is a guitar player and a mandolin player, we found him in Santa Cruz and he joined up a couple years after that so that is, that is the lineup.
Where were you living then? 31
