develop your project brief and finalise your budget. An architect can assess your site, set out the options, carry out feasibility studies and help you decide on the best way forward. Once agreed, an architect will use the project brief

to develop outline design proposals. They will present a number of initial concepts for you to choose from. Keeping your brief in mind the architect will make sure your aspirations are reflected throughout the project, offering advice on every aspect from materials down to the smaller details. Don’t be afraid to ask for explanations, perspective sketches or even simple models to help you understand the proposals. The more you understand at this stage the less likely you are to need to make changes on site, which can be costly. When you’ve settled on a final design the architect will transform the ideas into something that can be built. This includes coordinating


the work of other consultants into the design. Once agreed, between you, the design proposals will then be submitted for planning approval, if required. Next the architect will prepare the technical


drawings, specifications and a schedule of works that will be used to price the tender and construct the project. The architect can then invite and appraise tenders from builders and administer the building contract on your behalf.
