hanging Things Up at Events

“Out with the old and in with the new”may sound cliché,but it is quite appro- priate when addressing annual events. Planners need to resist the urge to approach their annual events in the same fashion just because“they have always done it that way”or“the budget doesn’t allow for anything new.”

According to Jason Showers, director of technical production for Advanced Staging Productions, annual events - especially fundraising galas - need to change the atmosphere in an effort to keep things fresh and interesting in order to capture and retain the attention and enthu- siasm of their audience.

Advanced Staging Productions incorporated stadium seating, wrap around scenic and a 45-foot wide screen to transform a hotel ballroom into an immersive, high energy atmosphere for a pharmaceutical national sales meeting.

"A change in venue, theme, décor and even food and beverage goes a long way toward estab- lishing a new mood each year," said Showers."The goals for the event may not change, but the atmosphere can play a large part in howthose goals are met. Technology is proba- bly the easiest and most versa- tile way to change atmosphere for an event. Even in the same venue, a different

technological

design can make a big difference. For example, using moving lights this year in place

of last year’s static décor lighting; or switching from projection screens to multi- ple sizes of monitors strategically placed throughout the room; or replacing walk-inmusic with environmental sounds that set a certain tone. All of these are simple ways to take the same room and create a new atmosphere for your guests.”

“Keeping up with the newest trends in technology can create a high tech, innovative feel,” Showers contin- ued. “Incorporating social media through live feeds or having virtual presenters are some examples of how you can present a newer technology that helps you to put a little spice into and a new spin on what was done at last year's event."

Advanced Staging Productions worked with the events team

from the Philadelphia Zoo to turn this hotel ballroom into a jungle atmosphere using lights, video and audio to make the guests feel like they were in the habitat of the lowland gorilla.
