Dispensing statistics available monthly
Whilst enjoying the evening of pharmacy excellence at the Scottish Pharmacist Awards, Community Pharmacy Scotland were celebrating themselves as they scooped Best Association Website at the Association Excellence Awards 2016.
The judges remarked, “This was a well-written entry which clearly communicated that CPS had created an effective, tangible change in perception of the organisation through their work. Attractive and friendly website in both computer and mobile format including intuitive navigation.”
The CPS website has come a long way over the past few years and the
team are always looking for ways to improve the functionality for users. “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that took part in our Communications Survey last year. The feedback you gave us helped shape a new look CPS and a big part of this was creating a brand new website that was modern, quick, easy to use and fully mobile compatible,” they told us after their win.
“The hard work isn’t over yet though. We are excited to announce that we will be launching an interactive FAQ App in early April which will help pharmacists to find the answers and information they’re looking for. Look out for more information on this over the next couple of weeks.”
Snapping the pharmacy sector
National Services Scotland (NSS) intend to pilot monthly release of prescribing data files at a low-level of organisation structure. English contractors have access to a prescribing data system called Check 34 that enables a level of benchmarking. The NPA met with National Services Scotland (NSS) and Community Pharmacy Scotland last year to discuss how Check 34 type information could be made available to contractors in Scotland. At those discussions NSS stated that they would look at making lower level statistics available and in Autumn NSS consulted on how contractors would envisage dispensing data to be available. I will be interested to hear member feedback on the usefulness of the data available once the pilot commences.
NPA helping you manage risk
NPA Board Member Noel Wicks recently hosted a “Meeting Challenges Together” event in Aberdeen. The event, on the 22nd March, included a discussion on Hub and Spoke models, looking at arguments for and against and Government proposals. Head of NPA Claims Glyn Walduck and Ellis Whittam Legal advisor Paul McQuade also led sessions on managing risk in the pharmacy.
The NPA also recently hosted a webinar on hub and spoke, feeding back the results received from our member survey and updating on the work of the hub and spoke task and finish group. Members can access the webinar on the NPA website.
NPA supporting your practice - Scottish Parliament
The Pharmacy (Premises Standards, Information Obligations, etc.) Order 2016 has now been accepted for approval by the Scottish Parliament which will support the amendments to the Pharmacy Order being passed prior to the May Parliament elections. This will remove the legislative barrier in Scotland to publishing GPhC inspection reports and will remove the GPhC’s duty to set premises standards in rules, enforcing through disciplinary procedures instead. The Scottish Parliament is the first to accept the Order.

In March, the Health (Tobacco, Nicotine etc and Care) (Scotland) Bill also passed stage 4 in Scottish Parliament. The Bill will activate Duty of Candour procedure and brings in the offence of Ill treatment and wilful neglect along with regulations for the sale of electronic cigarettes. Guidance on the implementation of the Bill is not available yet, and how that pertains to pharmacies.
The NPA responded to Government on specific recommendations for community pharmacy electronic cigarette supply, Duty of Candour and wilful neglect and will produce prompt member guidance. The Bill legislates for the offence of selling electronic cigarettes to under 18s and stipulates age verification systems to be in place. For more information contact
