required nutrients and water needed for health growth and development. As the child grows infant formula milk can be a suitable alternative, with many different types available. It is important that babies are not given sugary drinks as a substitute to milk, as this can have a signifi cant detrimental impact on the child’s oral and general heath and development.

Choosing drinks without sugar will help set healthy habits for life, prevent decay in fi rst teeth, and improve the overall health and nutrition of the baby3

. If community pharmacy is to lead by example, then perhaps a simple step to reduce the number of “baby-drink” items containing high sugar levels would encourage parents to make healthier choices for their children.

TEETHING Teething is a normal part of a baby’s development, with the fi rst teeth usually beginning to appear around 6 months old. The signs of teething can become apparent from the age of 3 months old and can include dribbling more than usual, red

cheeks, and sore gums. There are many techniques available to help ease teething, however the safest and most effective simply involves gentle massage of the gums with a clean fi nger, dry toothbrush, or a teething ring. Teething rings are often purchased by new parents, however often one or two rings per child is all that is required, and stock levels should refl ect this moderate need. One of the most common side effects of excessive dribbling, is the saliva can cause irritation to the skin on the chin, neck, and chest.

This can lead to dry, chapped or sore patches, and aiming to keep the skin as dry as possible is the best preventative action. In some cases, a barrier cream could be applied to help keep the skin soft and smooth and can be an economical option for fi nancially pressured parents.

TYPHARM LAUNCHES DOCUSOL PAEDIATRIC SOLUTION

Typharm are delighted to announce the OTC launch of Docusol Paediatric Solution, indicated for the effective and gentle relief of constipation in children and babies over six months.

Constipation is very common in childhood. It is prevalent in around 5-30% of the child population1. In their fi rst year, up to 4 in 10 children are likely to develop constipation at least once2. This means that in the UK, an estimated potential 270 thousand cases of constipation occur in infants each year.

Docusol Paediatric Solution is a strawberry fl avoured liquid oral solution containing docusate sodium. Docusate sodium acts as a dual action constipation treatment that helps to makes stools softer and easier to pass by increasing absorption of water and fats and also acts as a gentle stimulant.

Children should be given on to two 5ml spoonful three times daily, and infants one 5ml spoonful three times daily. It should be diluted in a fl avoured drink such as milk or fruit juice and consumed within 30 minutes of preparation. Docusol Paediatric Solution gets to work within one to three days.3

A widely prescribed P product for many years, the proactive marketing of Docusol Paediatric as an OTC product provides an opportunity to grow the overall laxative market.

Faye Carter, Marketing Manager, Typharm comments ‘OTC laxative sales have been fl at in the UK over the last few years, with an estimated market value of £53.4million44 We are confi dent that with Docusol Paediatric Solution there is now an opportunity to invigorate the market with the introduction of a unique and differentiated product, driving both volume and value growth.’

baby with a dentist soon after birth, or at least as the fi rst tooth appears is important to allow regular checks with a trained professional.

Introducing a baby to the dentist experience will help to reduce the risk of anxiety or phobias in later life, it also allows the dentist to keep a close eye on the oral health progression of the child and as such take corrective action at the fi rst possible opportunity. Some of the important recommendations for baby teeth are listed below:

• Brush teeth and gums at least twice each day, in the morning and last

thing at night.

• Use toothpaste containing at least 1000 parts per million (ppm)

fl uoride.

• Limit food and drinks containing sugar to mealtimes.

• Do not add sugar or salt (in any form) to weaning foods.

• Foods containing sugar should be kept to a minimum and are best

given at mealtimes.

• Register the baby with a dental practice and make the fi rst

appointment by the age of 6 months.

Toothbrushes in the UK are almost exclusively made by Oral B (Procter & Gamble), Colgate (Colgate- Palmolive) or Listerene Reach (Johnson & Johnson)4

. Although markets

dominated by a small number of competitors is rarely an economically progressive area, patients often respond to a well known brand name as it helps to build confi dence in the product – this needs to be well managed with accompanying appropriate advice, and where pharmacy staff can really shine.

DRINKS FOR HEALTHY BABY TEETH

It is important to consider how the foods and drinks given to children and babies can affect their teeth. It is not just what type of foods babies eat that is important, but also when they eat and drink them. Babies and young children require plenty of fl uids
