“I would like the future of pharmacy to be the vision of pharmacy’s Prescription for Excellence. A future in which we are rewarded for outcome data; for making someone with asthma breathe easier, or for enabling a patient who is 67 years-old to go cycling with his grandchildren, because we, as pharmacists, looked aſter their asthma”

The all-star healthcare cast would not have been complete without the presence of Professor McQuillan. On welcoming the esteemed guests, Professor McQuillan emphasised the sentiment of these awards and stated that pharmacy must be recognised as a fully integral part of all communities within Scotland.

The Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy Practice Award went to Ian Cowan. Presenting the award, Professor McQuillan stated that previous years have seen colleagues recognised from many sectors of pharmacy practice. “This year we return to the community,” he said.

Mr Cowan’s career spans almost fifty years as a registered pharmacist. From student days at Strathclyde through to company positions at a very senior level and relatively recently as Superintendent of one of the largest community pharmacy companies operating across Great Britain. This has been coupled with Board level input to pharmacy practice and being heavily involved with all four negotiating bodies across the UK.

In the late 1960s Ian began working with Sterling-Winthrop in Newcastle before moving to the community in Peterborough. In the early 1970s he returned to Scotland and spent a decade with R Gordon Drummond followed by a brief spell with McLaren’s in Glasgow.

In the early 1980s he returned to his Ayrshire roots and was appointed Superintendent at the independently owned Kyle & Carrick Group of pharmacies and, from there, moved to Area and then Regional management with LloydsPharmacy before taking up the role of Superintendent Pharmacist with Rowlands pharmacy where today he remains their Director of Pharmacy.

“Ian’s input to UK-wide service development also cannot be underestimated,” added Professor McQuillan. “This was also combined with being Chairman of Community Pharmacy Wales for four years between 2009 and 2013 successfully liaising with the Welsh Assembly Government to introduce new services there. He has also served as an Advisor to colleagues at Community Pharmacy Northern Ireland and is due to complete a third term as a Director and Board member of Community Pharmacy Scotland this May.”

Over £4,000 was raised on the night for this year’s nominated charity, Breast Cancer Care Scotland so a huge thank you to all of those who dug deep to support this extremely worthwhile cause. n
