restorative power of life— our natural healing abili- ty—to live a healthier, happier and more mean- ingful life. In his book, Lee uses the sun as a metaphor for nature and all that is natural. When living naturally, an organ- ism is balanced and the power and life force of
nature grants sustainability and stability to everything that exists. It is what enables the whole to maintain harmony and balance. When an organism is sick and out-of-balance, this power is manifest as the natural healing ability that restores balance, returning an organism to a healthy state. As a mod- ern society, one of the biggest challenges we now face is the sense that we a losing our ability to maintain our health, even as our healthcare system becomes more sophisticated and high-tech. The value and meaning of The Solar Body is to show the reader how to recover and return back to our natur- al balance and health by utilizing the body’s natural internal healing power.
Question: What inspired you to write The Solar
Body? Ilchi Lee: While teaching mind-body techniques for total wellness for 35 years, I have always been looking for an eas- ier and simpler way for people to realize their potential and be able to manage their own health. The Solar Body condenses everything I’ve discovered into very simple ideas and exer- cises that most people can incorporate into their daily lives. Q: What would you like readers to get out of the
book? IL: I hope readers feel empowered and gain a sense of
their own greatness and their own ability to maintain and improve their physical, mental, and emotional health. I think people in general rely too much on experts in today’s special- ized society without realizing how much power they have. Q: What is the most important message of The Solar
Body? IL: It’s that people are a part of nature, and we need to
discover our natural selves. As part of nature, we have the power to create health, wellness and happiness within us. Q: How has your experience influenced what you
teach? IL: Since I was a child, I struggled with existential ques-
tions such as why I am alive on earth. I put them away for a while in my early adulthood, but they eventually returned. I learned energy practices such as qigong and turned to medita- tion to uncover the answers. I found my answers, and began to share what I realized because I believed it would help oth- ers realize their true potential, too. Over time, I’ve taught tens of thousands of people. I’ve also traveled around the world, seen many beautiful natural places, and established medita- tion centers in South Korea, Japan, the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand. Through my experience, I’ve honed and simplified what I teach. It’s become simpler because I’m just helping people come back to who they really are and bring out natur- al abilities that have lain dormant.

Q & Awith Author Ilchi Lee Q: What are the main components
of the Solar BodyMethod? IL: The three elements that are
important for activating and enhancing your natural ability to heal yourself are breathing, temperature, and observation of the mind. These three elements are all interconnected and influence each other. The techniques I lay out in the book— Plate Balancing Exercise, Toe Tapping, Brain Wave Vibration, Sunlight Meditation, and Solar Energy Circuit Training, even the use of sage— improve all three elements simultaneously and auto- matically. When you breathe slowly and naturally from your
abdomen and feel your body temperature, concentrating on the lower abdomen, your body will become warmer. The warmth will be greater in your abdomen than in your head, which is the ideal for your health. In that temperature state, your mind can make clearer decisions (you keep a cool head), your abdominal organs can function more actively, and you have greater passion for life (a fire in your belly). Science has also shown that at the higher end of the body’s normal tem- perature range, your immunity, circulation, metabolism, and mood are enhanced. Through doing this, your mind’s ability to observe itself
and your body are also improved, making you more aware of your conditions and habits. With practice you can even devel- op your ability to the point where you subtly perceive every- thing that is going on inside you at every moment, even while you go about your day. That ability enables you not only to understand what is happening, but to know what you need. More importantly, you will know what you need before some- thing breaks down. Q:Why do you use the term “solar?” IL: “Solar” describes a symbol of nature. It refers to nat-
ural values that aren’t artificial or societal values. It’s about reviving a sense for the balance and harmony that exist per- fectly within us. A Solar Body is someone who shines as brightly as the sun because he or she has recovered a sense of nature within themselves, as well as their natural healing power and greatness of spirit, thus being able to create health and happiness for themselves without being dependent on artificial things or the external environment.
