Havening Techniques:

A Better Life Through Neuroscience® By Rebecca Suzanne Scott

What if there

was a modali- ty/technique that could simply and eas- ily clear the conse- quences of stressful events and trauma from your brain/mind and therefore, from your body, biology

and your energy field. If there were, would you want to know more about it? What if this technique/modality combined the use of lan-

guage with gentle, nurturing, soothing strokes to create perma- nent change.Would you want to know how this is achieved? What if this modality/technique had a strong foundation in

neuroscience and brain research. Would you want to know how we know that certain types of reassuring strokes can clear trau- ma and deep emotional states in the brain? The modality that combines all of the above is called Havening and the techniques are called The Havening Techniques R. Havening was created by Dr. Ronald A. Ruden, a physician and neuroscientist, whose medical practice is based in Manhattan. His twin brother, Dr. Steven Ruden, a Doctor of Dental Surgery based on Long Island, collaborated with him on its development. About 15 years ago Dr. Ronald Ruden was introduced, by a colleague, to EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique. He began exploring the tapping techniques of EFT and discovered that he was able to use them to successfully clear phobias for some of his office staff. At that time the explanation that Dr Ruden received for how

the tapping points of EFT worked was that they worked along meridians or energy lines in the body.As I have heard Dr. Ruden describe his experience, this explanation, given his background as aWestern medical doctor and neuroscientist, was not enough for him. Dr. Ruden knew that for a person's phobia to be cleared by

tapping on particular points on their body something also had to change in their brain in order for this shift to be possible. As a neuroscientist, Dr. Ruden wanted to know what that was. Thus began many years of research into how and where

trauma and deep emotion distress are stored and encoded in the brain, as well as how and what types of touch can change the brain to the de-traumatize the memory and remove it's negative effects from both our psyche and body. Here is the Cliff Notes version of what he discovered after

years of brain research. Dr. Ruden determined that trauma is encoded in the aspect of the brain called the Amygdala. He found that certain types of touch, when applied to spe-

cific areas of the body, (the palms of the hands, upper arms, and 2 areas on the face) produce DeltaWaves. The DeltaWaves pro- duce Serotonin which releases an enzyme. This enzyme dis- solves theAmpa Receptors, which have bound the trauma or dis- tress to the brain, and these Ampa Receptors physically recede into the brain. From this moment on they can never be accessed ever againwhichmeans the trauma or distress can never be expe- rienced again by the person who is the recipient of what is now referred to as Havening Touch R.Havening is about creating and having a "safe haven" for yourself. The Havening Techniques are part of a group of methods

called psychosensory therapies; these therapies use sensory input to alter thoughts, moods and behavior. They use touch as a ther- apeutic tool and this is called Havening Touch R.

There are three distinct applications for The Havening

Techniques: one is for emotional disturbances and encoded psy- chological trauma, the second is for wellness, stressmanagement and peak performance and the third is as a self-help tool. Stressful events and the consequences of traumatic encoding

can impact us in psychological and physical ways. The Havening Techniques have been shown to help with: Phobias, Abandonment, Fears, Chronic Pain, Grief, Anger, PTSD, Distressing Memories (loss. shocking news, broken relation- ships, shame, guilt, embarrassment), Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Victims of Natural Disasters and Man-Made Events (war, assault, fire, home intrusion). Inmy experience, Havening is beautiful and a deep and pro-

found modality that creates lasting change. This is equally true regardless of whether the sessions are done in person or by Skype. (During a Skype session you are taught how to apply Havening Touch R for yourself.) One of the beauties of Havening is that all you have to do is bring up the feeling of an event, emotional state or trauma that you want to clear. The feel- ing is what lights up the aspect of the brain in which it is encod- ed & then it can be cleared. You never have to give any verbal details of or relive the trauma, event or stressor. One of my clients offers a beautiful description of her expe-

rience of Havening: "I'd never heard of Havening. I was in a bit of a healing cri-

sis and Rebecca generously suggested Havening. I trust her com- pletely and have benefited from her hypnotherapy practice so I said yes without reservation. Though familiar with Rebecca's work, I was still surprised at how quickly and profoundly Havening lifted emotional pain frommy psyche and body. I think I was surprised because the conscious mind demands logic and Havening seems to bypass it to work directly with the deeper parts of the mind and with the emotional and physical bodies. Havening is not a magic pill. As with any therapeutic process, you have to be willing to feel your emotions. But with a little trust, the results are pretty magical. I am drawn to simplicity and Havening is a simple, elegant practice. Children, when hurt, want to be touched and held. It is so basic and natural. To touch and be touched with such love and compassion is an act of Grace, and with Grace comes the miraculous."
