leaflet came through my door advertising a new clinic in my
area.After looking at the website I decided to give it a try to see if it would help a neck problem following a car accident more than36 years ago. The clinic is within easy walking distance of my house, which is an added bonus. As well as the neck discomfort, which can be triggered for no apparent reason, I was also concerned about my “neck forward” posture. I would occasionally catch sight of myself in a shop window and was very unhappy with my posture. The clinic is in a private house which has a small
room dedicated for the treatment – it is comfortable and private. The initial consultation was thorough with many questions about the history of the problem and forms to complete. The treatment is very gentle and it is hard to believe that it can make a positive difference, but I remained open-minded as I am very keen to see an improvement especially in my posture. My therapist, Barbara-Anne, announced that I had a condition known as Kyphosis, which is a curving of the upper part of the spine, and she showed me some photographs of a child with the condition who had been helped by the Bowen Technique. However, it remained to be seen how my older body would react, especially as I had been living with the condition for so many years. To my amazement and relief
a reduction in the Kyphosis could be seen after just 4 or 5 weeks. Barbara –Anne had also given me some exercises to carry out each day, and I stick to these
religiously.After a few more weeks it was quite clear that my neck was becoming more upright and the posture was improving. After 16 weeks of weekly treatment there has been a mas- sive improvement and I can actually feel that I am more upright. I am no longer scared to look at myself in shop windows and my wife says that my posture is much improved. I had been concerned that making my neck more upright would cause greater discomfort from my old injury but, if anything, my neck seems more robust than before and the bouts of discomfort are less frequent. The treatments have now been reduced to every two
weeks for a further two or three months, after which I should need only occasional treatments, although I will have to continue the exercises permanently. The real test will be to see if my posture is maintained without regular treatment sessions. Judging by the very positive results so far, I am convinced that this treatment has made a perma- nent change in me for the better. Thanks Barbara – Anne. Roger Hoyle February 2012
