REBRAND FOR TORBAY FAMILY-RUN GUESTHOUSE
A Torbay guesthouse has been given a complete overhaul after being sold.
The Torwood Gardens Hotel attracted a huge amount of interest when it was put on the market earlier this year, a property that had been under the same ownership for more than 25 years.
Liz Edwards has purchased it and renamed it Harbour Heights, following substantial internal and external investment in addition to a new website which is linked to all major booking portals, with funding for the purchase provided by Philip Meek Mortgages in Torquay.
Boasting eight en-suite bedrooms laid out over two floors, owner’s accommodation and a resident’s car park, the property has elevated views over Torwood Gardens and had been previously run as a lifestyle business for many successful years.
GUEST HOUSE OPENS ITS DOORS TO VICTIMS OF CUMBRIA FLOODING
Graham and Paula Smith, who found Lingmoor Guest House in Windermere through the Channel 4 show “A Place in the Sun Home or Away,” first gave away rooms to flood victims in 2009 and have now repeated the kind gesture for those hit by the recent heavy rains that have caused devastation in Cumbria. When a group of regular guests were unable to return to Scotland because of flooding in December, Graham and Paula quickly offered them a free night’s stay.
She said: “I was coming back from a visit home to Manchester and had returned successfully through back roads I knew when I received a call from Ellen, one of the repeat guests, to ask if they could stay another night as each way they turned there were roads blocked. Without hesitation we said yes. The following morning once again they checked out and wanted to pay for their stay. We had already discussed the evening before not to charge our repeat guests and wanted to do something to help the county and the flood victims once again. We are going to donate the two nights’ stay of £150 to Mountain Rescue, who have and still are working tirelessly to help Cumbria return to normal.”
CELEBRATING RECOGNITION AT THE NORTH EAST TOURISM AWARDS
Martineau Guest House, in Tynemouth, was one of the big winners at the North East Tourism Awards 2015 by picking up gold in the Taste of England award.
And they enjoyed further success on the night, taking home a bronze in the Bed & Breakfast/Guest Accommodation of the Year award.
Sarah Stewart, chief executive at destination management and marketing organisation NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “Huge congratulations to all of this year’s winners.”
“It has been another outstanding year for entries with a high standard of entrants across the board.”
James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland, said: “Congratulations to all of this year’s award winners. I wish them the very best in competing for our VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in 2016.”
Winners at the regional awards have the chance to showcase their business and the north east on the national stage at the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2016.
