MAKE 2016 A HAPPY AND GREENER YEAR

et me start by wishing every- body a very Happy New Year and I hope the year just gone was a successful one for you and
that 2016 will be even better. As a hotel supplier for over 35
years we have witnessed a good deal of change and a shift in the attitude towards the environment and environmental matters which has impacted on the hospitality industry. When we first started in this
business the term environmentally friendly had little meaning and even the term climate change – now referred to as global warming – was not generally a matter for discussion. It is fair to say that, in the past,
there has been some uncertainty about what
environmentally friendly
meant and what constitutes ‘green’ and the relevance of recycled and recyclable products. There are now a number of organisations dedicated to the hospitality industry that help make sense of it all and who help steer the way ahead for hoteliers and their suppliers such as Considerate Hoteliers, Green Tourism Business Scheme and Green Achiever. that minimise risk to the environment and the eco systems, however there still exists a certain amount of ambiguity when purchasing products with an environmental claim and, in some cases, do not always fulfil those claims under scrutiny. For clarification, labelling and
certification has been introduced by such bodies as Nordic Swan and EU Ecolabel which help consumers identify products and services that have a reduced environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. EU Ecolabel is a voluntary label recognised throughout Europe. In order to preserve and embrace
environmental issues and concerns it is essential for us all to develop our own environmental policies and put these policies into practise. Some larger corporations, such as the *Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, has gone a stage further and has launched their own group-wide energy saving initiative ‘Think Planet’ which aims to target 25% reduction in energy consumption by 2016. Think Planet focuses on creating smart energy habits which their employees have embraced and participate in and which, perhaps, is an essential start for all companies looking to introduce their own environmental policy.
It is an important part of the
development of all environmental policies to involve suppliers as well as employees and engage with them to discuss how they, too, can form part of the overall aims and objectives. In our particular case our industrial
partners adhere to values of social and environmental responsibility: they comply with the Good Manufacturing Practices (ISO 22716) and ISO 14001 certification standards. All our cosmetic products are manufactured in compliant factories where everything is done to minimise impact on the environment by streamlining supply chain solutions, reducing water and energy use, recycling waste, restricting the use of outer packaging and using clean technologies. Every production process is put under the microscope from sourcing and choice of ingredients, packaging, manufacturing and cleaning processes with water to ensure there is minimal damage to the environment. Our clients – and yours – need
to know that we all speak a common language when it comes to the issue of environmentally friendly products, or energy saving products, or toiletry products that do not contain harmful substances. The world is changing as we know it
with various adverse climatic conditions to remind us so we must all try and work together in 2016 and beyond to ensure we care for our environment as we are the custodians of our precious planet.
