only horseback riding skills and horseman- ship, but respect and responsibility for horses and others, including how to be an asset in the community. She is an accomplished and eloquent instructor with the ability to recog- nize and adapt her teaching style to each indi- vidual student and each horse’s learning pro- cess. Waller is also well-known as a humble individual who recognizes the importance of her previous and continu- ing education with dressage instructors and masters both in Canada and across the pond in Europe. In addition to coaching, Waller volun-
teers her time in support of local clinics and shows, and does an exemplary job, emphasizing safety and care for the ani- mals. Teaching by example and promot- ing teamwork, Waller encourages her stu- dents to volunteer as well.
As an instructor, Waller has taught not
ing the local island horse shows. She encour- ages all of her students to enter the show ring, and UpperVancouver Island has seen a recent growth of dressage, especially amongst junior competitors, thanks to her influence. From introducing small children to the
joys of horses to coaching upper level riders in the art of dressage, both western and English styles, Waller has touched the lives of many. Dressage Canada is pleased to rec- ognize Waller’s altruistic efforts in support of dressage in Canada by awarding her the DC Volunteer of the Month Award for October.

caring and training horses, Di is in tune with each of her clients’ horse’s needs. She not only organizes everyone’s yearly vaccines and den- tal work, she is diligent with day-to-day care as well: she fine tunes feed programs, recom- mends therapies to maximize well being and performance (i.e., massage, chiropractor), con- sults with farriers and ensures all tack and equipment is suitable and properly fitting. Di’s talent for training both horse and rider allow both to learn and develop skills at a pace right for them. If ever there is an emergency, Di immediately reaches out to McKee-Pownall and is there to support her clients and their horses. Di creates a balanced schedule of training, competition and rest- never asking too much and always looking to progress learning and have fun. Whenever the opportu- nity arises Di passes along her knowledge by teaching her clients how to care for their hors- es (i.e. how to poultice, administer eye drops). Di takes great pride in her work and provides excellent care to her client’s horses and is well deserving of this award. Presentation of this award to Di Lang-
