2015 RUS Ontario

Year-End Summary As the 2015 RUS

Ontario season trotted into the history books and top 2015 honors were secured, the participants and fans of Racing Under Saddle came together to help a fellow horseman. Corey MacPherson is

waging a courageous battle with cancer at his home of PEI. Corey is the namesake of the ultra tough trotter Mopey Corey; and spent a part of his life in Ontario working with his friend Anthony MacDonald who in 2007 tagged his yearling with the light-hearted name. Corey eventually returned to PEI and started a family, only to receive the frightening diagnosis. Meanwhile, his Ontario racing family is raising money to help the family with the sale of homemade candy apples and RUS t- shirts. RUS Ontario was able to contribute $1000 contribute and thank RUS sponsors Mad Barn Nutri- tion and Minor Details for matching the donations. RUS Ontario also put

the finishing touches on the title winners of 2015. Going into the October 31st RUS Finale, rider Natalie Elliott could not be caught for the winningest rider title. With a solid 4th place finish Saturday night she capped off a terrific season that saw her tally an impressive 10 starts with 5 wins, 1 second and 2 shows. Her closest rivals were Sarah Town with 6 (1-3-1) and Marit Valsatad with 7 (1-2-0). For top RUS horse hon-

ours, Santo Domingo topped the earnings and wins list. He stashed away $13,950 in RUS money and boasts a sharp 5 starts under saddle with 3 wins and a second. By virtue of his students prowess under saddle, Mike Guitard is the top RUS trainer as well. The owners of Santo Domingo, Jalade Invest- ments Ltd, Deanmar Sons Stable and Peter Miscolczi, also deserve a tip of the hat with their veteran trotter making exciting moments in his under saddle exploits. Honorable mentions in

the top horse division go to Thor Seelster 5 (2-1-1), Massive Muscles 3(2-1-0), Lexus Hawkeye 3(1-0-2), Tragically Shipp 2 (2-0-0), and Twin B Excalibur who made 5 RUS starts and never missed a check. 12 year old Twin B Excalibur will be hanging up both his saddle and harness to head to retirement for his con- nections trainer/owner Ran- dall Fulmer and partner Phillip Katcher. He retires with lifetime earnings of $390,713 of which $3151 was 2015 RUS earnings. “Congratulations to

everyone who had a suc- cessful season. Thank you to the many people who helped make RUS a reality, especially our sponsors, the tracks, and the hard work- ing people behind the scene.”

Deciding On A Gift For Your Horsey Person

By Kelly Bowers. Sometimes, the perfect gift

idea for your horse person comes as quickly and easily as a lightbulb turning on. Other times, unless they write a Santa list, you have to get creative, do a bit of sleuthing or enlist the help of a spy. For instance, my dad, who lives in Florida can be a challenge - so, I cheat. Each year, I ask his sneaky spouse for gift suggestions. Some- times, her infol can lead to the best -how did you know?- gift. Other years, I send his favourite author's latest book - less sur- prising but always a hit too. Either they are a collector

or they're not. If they are, you just need to know what they collect, what they have and what they need. There may even be a written list some- where. Then, hunt down some- thing that suits your good taste and your budget from the latter. It's a sure bet. Your first step is to gather

information. If you seem them on a regular basis, watch for what they might need or want. Is his boot bag looking a bit shaggy or does he need a travel bag for that awesome show hel- mut? Keep your eye open for favourite brands, style or colours but you can take a sneak peek at their FB or Pin- terest pages for clues too. If you have the chance to shop togeth- er, take them to where they love to shop, and secretly take notes or pics of various options. Your best chance may

come from really paying atten- tion during your regular conver- sations. When she complains about the horrible condition of her grooming brushes and everything she owns is some kind of pink - voila! You're on the search for a nice pink brush or grooming kit. You can call area tack shops to see what's available. If you plan ahead, you can even have her name (or her horse's) painted or engraved on it. Perfect, right? Happy hunting!
