Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week 2016 Celebrates 50 Years

Horse Day Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week 2016

(#GBFW16), celebrating its 50th year, will run from Wednesday, January 6th to Tuesday, January 12th, starting with Beef Day, and end- ing on Crops Day. It is a 7 day Agricultural Conference packed with a most impressive and informative line-up of speakers! It is held at the Elmwood Community Centre in Elm- wood (# 38 Queen St. West). Elmwood is located approximately 8 kilometers north of Hanover on County Road # 10. The co-ordi- nators for this event, Grey County Ag Ser- vices, in conjunction with agricultural com- modity leaders from Grey and Bruce Counties, have attempted to feature at least one high profile speaker for each day, targeting the issues and challenges facing the farming com- munity today. One of the most exciting days each year

is Horse Day – Sunday January 10, 2016. It runs from 9:45 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. It features a full adult program, and an exciting, interactive youth program. Where else, in one venue, can you experience presentations from: an Equine Veterinarian; the President of Ontario Xtreme Cowboy; one of the founding members of the Western Style Dressage Association of Cana- da; the Equine Nutrition Senior Advisor with Agribrands Purina Canada; a breeder and trainer of show jumpers and combined driving ponies; plus, visit a packed tradeshow? This year the adult program will include: • Equine Veterinarian and Owner, Dr. Angie Hill from Georgian Bay Equine Veterinary Services in Thornbury, will be our first speak- er. She will share, Modern Equine Dentistry. Dr. Hill’s presentation will explain common dental problems in the horse and will illustrate how modern dentistry can help keep our horse’s teeth in good condition throughout their life, especially in the performance ring. • After many requests to add him to the agen- da, Lantz McLaren, President of Ontario Xtreme Cowboy, will share Let’s Get a Little Xtreme! In his presentation he will dig into what it takes to go out and play at one of North America’s fastest growing horse sports. • Last year at 2015 Horse Day, there was a short introduction to Carriage Driving. The response was very positive! This year, Martha

Younger, Owner Operator of BDF Equestrian will delve into, The Growing Sport of Car- riage Driving. She will discuss pleasure and combined driving, and will detail what kind or pony or horse you should look for. She will also share ideas of how to train your horse or pony to drive. • Elaine Ward, Coach/Trainer is going to review the hottest trend in riding today, West- ern Dressage. Elaine will share that Western Dressage is not just a discipline, but also a training method for other Western Disciplines. She adds that Western Dressage has developed a new market for riders who wish a middle of the road style of riding and for horses who don’t fit in the traditional categories. • Our last speaker of the day will be Marc- Andre Blouin. He is the Equine Nutrition Senior Advisor for Agribrands Purina Canada. His nutritional presentation will cover, Feed- ing the Cushing’s/Insulin Resistant Horse. Meanwhile, in the basement, the kids are

going to have a blast! They are going to start out with Perfect Pony Picture Pointers, facili- tated by photographer Rachel Wyssen. Next, GBFW is delighted to have three Youth Champions in 2016: Shania Robinson, Hannah Forget and Emma Webb. After lunch, the youth, as part of Horse Play, will take part in interactive sessions about: First Aid Kits, by Dr. Angie Hill; Nutrition by Marcia Cunning- ham from Bluewater feed Co. Ltd.; and Horse- less Xtreme Cowboy Challenge by Lantz McLaren. They will also enjoy Horsey Crafts - Cute Horsey Cupcakes. These crafts are sponsored by High Meadows Farm. More Horse Play will follow. Registration is $20 adults / $10 youth at

the door. No pre-registration is required. The Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week Com-
