so back to the mesh wear as I dodged afternoon thunderstorms on a mixture of grooved and fresh pavement into Portland. It would have been really easy to
blast back to Ottawa from Portland, but I planned in an extra day to ride through the mountain passes in Vermont. I had a lovely ride on the 302 into Vermont until I got back to find that the 125 pass was closed due to construction. Instead of being a bummer, it led to the discovery of the 100 through the valley on the east side of the mountains. Freshly paved, it was just a beautiful afternoon of bendy roads beside rivers and mountains up to the switchbacks on the 17 pass through the mountains. The last day unfortunately was
going to end up with some straight roads. I could have gone up through the Lake Champlain islands, which is always a beautiful ride, but because it had been in the news I took the ferry across the lake and headed for Dannemora NY. It has to be the most depressing place in the world. The prison dates from the era of Teddy Roosevelt as Governor, and all the houses trail off down the hill south of the prison. I can’t imagine waking up every day to look at concrete walls and guard towers, no matter what side of the wall I was on. This was a fun, spur of the
moment trip. 7 days, 4500km. The one thing I discovered is that travelling alone, I’m no longer the slow guy in the group! I get to stop when and where I want, for as long as I want. Still, I have to admit, I did miss the guys. I wonder where we can go next year? I’m open to suggestions.
